Neutral between 5th & 6th

Hello everyone,

My TBS seems to have a intermittent neutral spot between 5th and 6th gear while I'm riding. I've noticed this several times where it doesn't fully engage into the next gear and the tach revs way up. I thought I may have not put enough force on the shifter, but this doesn't really happen with other gears.

Is this a common problem with the TBS?

Should I be worried about this and see a mechanic?

This is common in my experience with Hinckley triples. I had that happen on my 02 Tbird and it happens on occasion with my 04 TBS. I just make sure to not do a lazy gear shift from 5th to 6th. I haven't had a false neutral in quite a while now doing that (in fact I can't even remember my last).

interesting...I've never had this on my Adventurer (yet anyway), but I regularly hit a false neutral when I rode both of my previous Hondas, usually between 5th and 6th.

Well it's good to see that I'm not the only one. I think.

I never had this issue with off road bikes.

I used to have this happen on my Legend between 3rd and 4th. I started using the Mobile oil made especially for Triumph and it hasn't happened since.

It's happened to me as well... same story. Also, I once hit a bump in 5th with my foot under the shifter, and it popped out of gear. Scary... but nothing to worry about.

Exclamation

I had 1 false neutral while chasing my friends (who were on sportsbikes) 2 yrs ago. I think between 3rd and 4th. I was half decided to change up and saw the tight left hander in front of me and half thought better. Let the clutch out and open the throttle and..NEUTRAL! huh? Oh Sh*t! Clutch in UP 1 gear and turn hard.
How hard? I scraped all the rubber and a fair bit of aluminum off the footpeg. As well as taking most of the sole off my left boot.
The Progresive fork springs went in shortly after that.
Nowadays if I'm out with those Loons its my Speed Triple as weapon of choice.

Same here, I can hit a false neutral on just about every gear change.

I've got more false neutrals than I ever did with my '75 Trident [best gearbox used] or '82 TSS.

I reckon the TBS gearchange is notchy and inexact, never been impressed.
