What wheels will fit a tbird?

Am looking for help on replacement wheels. I gather that the ZZR1200 wheels can be made to go on a thunderbird with a little swearing. Possibly also daytona wheels? Anything else? Are ZZR1100 wheels any different?

Getting ahead of myself as am still sorting out pods/jets, but I am considering a wheel swap as a future project.

Wisdom much appreciated...

I'm similarly interested. I just changing the back tire for the first time on my legend and have to say its the heaviest wheel, bar none, I've ever handled. My wheels are 17" which would remain my preference.

Found a little info in the forum. Doesn't sound that hard to swap the wheel out. If you can do a little hacking metal work and welding, no big deal to make a new mount for the rear caliper. I made mounts to use CBR929rr calipers front and rear on my old moto guzzi and on the front of my honda 750 nighthawk. Have to have a go for it attitude; in my case it helped to watch monster garage.

Hey Spooner, like everyone, glad you weren't hurt.

Question, Are those wheels from a Trophy? What all is involved in the switch? I've looked for a thread and haven't seen one or missed it.

The wheels are Kawasaki ZZR1200 wheels, ZRX1200 will do too. For the rear I had to make new spacers. The rear brake has to be exchanged for an early Trophy 900 brake...everything i.e. caliper, torque arm, caliper mounting bracket...you can keep the
m/c and brake line. The reason for having to change rear brake is mainly because the ZZR wheel has a much smaller rear rotor compared to the T-bird.
Upfront I needed the ZRX1200 fork, rotors, calipers, front axle, speedo drive, speedo cable, master cylinder (any Nissin 5/8) and brake hoses (aftermarket 2-piece).

I've actually copied Mick Maguires set-up. I might have missed some parts....I'll have to think about that.
It's not a difficult job...it's just a matter of getting all the parts and making the correct rear wheel spacers...after that it's just a bolt on kind of thing.

Yep, seen that post and drooled at Spooner's legendary machine

ZZR1200 wheels are proving a **** sight harder to pick up cheap than the 1100 and various others though. Still, not in a hurry.

I did it, I've installed the Kawasaki zzr1200 back wheel on my Legend TT. FANTASTIC; my bike was a theft salvage but what I didn't know is the back wheel was out of round with several broken spokes. Now the bike feels like riding on silk! And maybe with the smoother ride the mileage will go up. And i can use a plug to repair flat tires.

I bought a wheel with the sprocket, also 530 chain. Both the legend and the kawasaki use 20mm axles. The hardest part was adapting the Triumph caliper to bear on the smaller rotor. I've done it making adpating parts, but I'm not happy with it and may put on a caliper from a CBR or some such. Why? The caliper on the bike is made for a bigger rotor so it doesn't have to have as much mechanical advantage as a caliper that goes on a smaller rotor. We'll see if my logic works in reality.

I paid 160.00 for the Kawasaki ZZR1200 wheel with sprocket and rotor delivered. Bummer for me, one of the two wheel outer bearings fall out. Ask you seller to tape them in so if the box gets whopped in transit, they won't fall away. You cannot use them as is, but they can be adapted.

I ended up making spacers on my metal lathe to make everything fit. I could have used a step-drill and some steel washers instead, and did so for one extra shim.

Now to figure out if I can do the same for the front.

Let me know if I can be of help

On my TBS I've got Daytona forks and front wheel with Tokico six pot calipers - a straight swap for the TBS wheel/forks/calipers. Rear wheel is also Daytona with a Trophy brake caliper disc and brake torque arm - you need to make a spacer for the rear wheel

On reassessment, the adapted stock Legend rear brake is working just fine on the kawasaki rotor.

i cannot believe how much smother this bike feels without that out-of-round spoked wheel. and the monster 180/55 rear tire is pretty cool, too. haven't been on any back roads with it yet but has to be better than the lumpy bumpy wheel.

You might want to take a look here:

http://www.triumphrat.net/photogalle...um32/album621/

my bike - ZZR wheels (they are the same as ZRX) ZRX1200R, 3 way adjustable cartridge forks (race tech upgraded). They bolt straight into the tbird trees.
The front end is an easy swap - just use all ZRX parts (including the speedo drive and cable) - the only fabbing you will have to do is the front fender (unless you use a ZRX one).

AFAIK I was the first person to bolt ZRX wheels / suspension onto a T3 Triumph. Several have done it since.

One word of warning; going off curbs or speed bumps, the 180/55 tire will grab the chain guard. I trimmed the guard once and it happened again. I'll keep trying.
