Hi

I am new to this website and new to Thunderbirds. My overall mechanical knowledge/spannerwork is OK - spent many years in my younger days tuning and tricking a variety of Brit Bikes (mainly BSA A65)

I love my 98 6-speed T/Bird - the 'chrome cruiser', and do not want mega-power; I have a modified SV1000, 'the blue meanie' for that, but do find the stock engine a bit flat, particularly in the lower rev range. Would love to add another 10 HP or so and a bit more bottom end grunt. Only mod I am aware of to the bike prior to me buying it is the addition of Triumph off-road cans.

All you experienced owners out there got any useful tips??

Anything and everything welcome.

Excellent site - many thanks to those who keep it running.

Barry

Fitting S3 cams and re-jetting would give you a substantial boost. Use the keyword search for more details in this forum.

Welcome!

I did the jet kit & KN Air filter, after the off road pipes, it really runs well now. The cams are out of my price range.

Thanks for the suggestions, good folks.

Is it worth removing the restrictor rubbers if the bike has them - is re-jetting required?

Having had a good look around the site I wonder if the answer is to find a cheap TBS motor and slot that in!! :???: :-D

Didn't take a closer look but saw an ad last year for a TB with a 1200 Trophy motor slotted in - so - seriously - am I best advised to just enjoy my TB for what it does best - a beautiful relaxed and laid back cruiser - and keep my sv1000 for when I feel the need to take life and limb in hand. Or is that like cheatin on your woman?

I swapped out the rubbers on my 98 while it was being re-jetting. It makes the engine a little more revvy.

I think it was a positive change, but probably not enough by itself to be worht the trouble of pulling the carbs. If you were going to have the carbs out for re-jetting etc. you could do it.

I have noticed that my fuel economy has dropped after changing the rubbers and re-jetting. The way I drive I have to refuel at 90 miles.

I actually had to switch to reserve in Arkansas at 86 miles, but I was riding it pretty hard and passing a lot of cars.

Wabbit...you are getting horrendous mileage. I can hammer at mine (when it works) and not have to worry about the reserve until around 140 miles.

don't know why.

I could probably run it to 110 or 120 before switching to reserve on a normal day.

The bike runs great. It has been re-jetted and the unrestricted boots put on.

I just jetted my Legend and also have a K&N filter.on The jet kit I bought has 2 sizes of mains #100 and #105, I went with the #100 cause I felt that I was getting too near the limits of the suspension/brakes. Got the Kit from GreatBay Triumph in the U.S. I believe Jack Lilley also sell a kit.
The cams IMO are overkill, but to each his own I guess.
