Unhappy Carburetor Hoses

I just reworked my 99 Legend for its 40K mile tune-up. When I put it all back together, that ratnest of hoses has me a little concerned. Can someone give me some good advice on where everything routes. Fuel, breather, vent, overflow lines, nothing gives a good example of it, not my Haynes, not bikerbandit, nothing. Lastly, are the two long hoses between my carbs just for vent, or should they go to something. Thanks guys.

Maybe next time I'll pay attention to where everything goes before I take it apart...

The fuel line goes into the T connection between the #2 and #3 carbs and the vent lines go to the upper T connectors.

There's a picture in my photo album. The clicky will get you to the 'Wrench Head' sub album but you'll need to go to the main album and then into the 'Mutato Mods' sub album. (Enjoy the Monstrosity Tour while you're there. )

The vent lines go over the air filter box and down along the spine under the bike.

That's perfect. I went back last night to look at everything once more, and wound up puting it back together exactly as you had said. I was just a little worried about the two vent lines, to make sure that they didn't go anywhere specific. The pic that you had of your carbs was pretty much the same one what I had in me Haynes. However, I see that you put in a fuel filter in between the tank and the carbs. I tried that, only with one a little bigger, and the bike shut off on me on my reserve once. So I stopped and sloshed it around a bit and it started back up. Have you had any problems like that? I also like the spring idea, I may have to look into that, that could have been what pinched it off.

As for the monstrosity tour... very cool. I like the mods. Your first dyno run says that you only put out 61 HP, isn't that a little low? I thought it was 69 stock. THanks for the help...

When I first got my Bird, I was having all sorts of problems with stalling, etc.

Turned out BOTH vent lines were kinked...I straightened them out and all was good.

After I put in the filter the bike started running weak and misfiring on the highway. When I got home and looked I found the hose kinked so I put in the spring.

The deal with the spring is to get a 1/4" extension spring and stretch it out. That reduces the diameter so it will fit inside the tubing and still provides enough support to prevent kinking or collapsing.

When you cut off the excess spring, be sure to bend the ends to the inside of the spring so they can't cut through the tubing. That would suck.

Stock is 69 crankshaft (BHP) but actually about 60 at the rear wheel (RWHP).

There's about a 15% loss in the drivetrain between the crank and rear wheel, so the manufacturers get to brag a bit.

On the Monstrosity Tour, I spotted a really nice concrete gorilla (in pink!) on the way to work, so I'll be stopping one of these days to get a shot of that. It's just up the street from a really tacky hairdressers sign where (I've been told) fat women in bikinis will cut your hair and give you an overpriced beer.
