Fuel Petcock leak question

Today I removed the fuel tank, preparing for a valve clearance inspection. I set it up off the floor and noticed it was leaking through the petcock at the point it would normally connect to the fuel line - although set to the off position. I moved the lever around a bit to see if it would seat better, but a steady slow drip continued. I drained the remaining three gallons to empty the tank, and set out to see if anyone else has dealt with this on the site. I could not find any definitive information about sources to rebuild, although the Triumph manual states this is not an option. Bike Bandit will sell me a new one for $100 plus shipping. Just hoping there is a less painful solution.

mine leaks too . i use a piece of fuel line with a bolt for a plug when i take my tank off . actually last time i took it off it didn't leak so i didn't have to .

if your float needles are working there's no problem , cept when you take the tank off .

In the "Parts Interchangeability" thread, I saw that a petcock from a Kawasaki Zephyr 750 fits well.

"The part # is 51023-1175
According to my local dealer, this part # has been superceded by #51023-1267.
List price is about $70.00"

You can make the Kawasaki ones fit (I did)

the weep is pretty normal - it may or may not be fixed by new seals. Personally I didnt try. I like the Kawa petcock as that way I never have to turn it off except for the winter

Mick,
How is that - a different design that does not require turning off each tiem?

Can't you take it apart and put in new rubber?

Having taken apart several petcocks, I can tell you there usually are a couple of very small "O" Rings that do all of the sealing. The unrepairable ones I have seen, had severely worn aluminum parts that were pretty much unsalvageable. The petcock on my T-3C is not vacuum operated, so there is no diaphram to go bad.

its vacuum operated from one of the carbs. The vacuum essentially holds the petcock open if you will

...So, normally, a vacuum petcock is "Off", even when the lever is in the "On" position, if the engine is not running or being turned over by the starter. In fact, many do not have an "Off" position, only "On" or "Run", and "Reserve". Many do, however, have a "Prime" position, which is esentially a manual "On" position, to allow the float bowls to fill up before cranking the engine with the starter.

Here's mine

Its a modified one from a ZRX1100 - dont go this particular route or youll have to modify the outlet to clear the carbs (I replaced it with a 90 degree elbow)

But anyhoo - it has "prime" "run" and "reserve" no off. Prime is only ever used for filling the bowls after maintenance / extended layup etc. It bypasses the vacuum control.
