We're moaning about the grade not the cost!!!

Our country produces oil. Countries that don't produce oil of course pay more.

The current price situation is because our federal government thinks they can "fix" an economic slow down by lowering interest rates. Flooding the market with U.S. Dollars has sent the value plummeting.

Well, your gas would be a lot cheaper if your government wasn't screwing you on the price -- just like our pack of jackals in Congress.

We've got about 112 billion barrels of oil in USA (Gulf of Mexico, continental shelf, Alaska, etc.) but there's been a 25-year moratorium on new drilling -- passed by Congress.

On the continental shelf there's an estimated 44 billion barrels of domestic oil and 232 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. About 85% of that is closed to exploration and exploitation -- thanks again to Congress.

That increases the prices world wide -- not just in the USA.

When you add in the moratorium on building new nuke plants to reduce our need for fossil fuels, the stupidity of Congress is staggering.

Oh yeah, don't forget to add in the USA's corporate taxes are the second highest in the world and now Congress is talking about a 'windfall profits tax.'
The cost of that tax would, of course, be added into the price of gasoline by the oil companies.

Welcome to the new millenium.

Jim

OMG - now this is degrading into a political discussion.

Al - I guess you have never heard of the North Sea. Produces about 5 million barrels per day for the Brits.

Back on topic everybody!

Ridiculous price? US gas prices? Over here in Norway, we pay $2, 50 per litre. A US gallon is the same as 5 litres, if my memory serves me right.

(It's still half the price of bottled water, which we tend to buy without raising an eyebrow. Go figure)

I think that price of pint of beer in Norvegian pub raises more eyebrows

In Finland we have quite same prices of gasoline like in Norway, but I don't let that spoil my joy of riding my Legend. The feel of it is something that you can't buy with money (well, actually I bought it last summer) and all the money I have put to my bike has proven to be my best investment so fo far. F**k the fuel economy, I'm having fun. I have used 98 or 99+ in my bikes and going to continue that, there is no too high octane, too low octane is bad for motors. In Wikipedia there is more info about octane and this http://vettenet.org/octane.html is a good one too

Wink

Well, when the owners manual was printed for my '02 there was no "reformulated fuel" at the time. This crap does not retain it's octane as long as the old fuels and since I can never be sure how long the old girl will end up sitting I always leave it with a full tank of super. Hey, it's only 10 cents more a gallon than 89 and the other day I clocked my best at 54.9 mpg using it. That was cruising the backroads at 40 to 60 mph with very little knee dragging going on. So I don't know. I say use what you feel works for you and leave it at that. AS long as it's not pinging, who cares!

When you take taxes out of the equation both here and there, fuel prices are closer than you might think. Gripe about the extra taxes you pay rather than us not paying as much as you do.

And now in the UK politicians infinite wisdom, they want to add another tax to you guys and make you pay per mile that you drive. I thought about moving there one time but nixed the idea when I figured out that with the extra taxes, I'd have to make over £175,000 just to break even. You guys are getting raped, plain and simple.

And on the flip side of that coin, most Americans are spoiled brats and don't realize how easy we have it here.

I use 89 octane from Citgo, which is 100% gasoline with no ethanol. Always get 55 mpg, with most of my riding secondary roads and one up.

Politics is obviously designed to operate using the cesspool theory, where the biggest pieces float to the top. Why worry about fuel costs and other things over which I have no control? Riding my Legend is all about being in the moment and forgetting about all of that ka-ka. Cheap therapy no matter the cost of gas!

Devaluation of the dollar?

Printing up 30 Billion Dollars in treasury notes, selling them to China, and then spending the money in IRAQ isn't helping either.

Grr,
Courtney in Seattle

No ethynol?

I thought every state in the US was using 10% reformulated or E85. All us snowmobilers and riders of other two strokes will be flocking to your area for mass quantities if this is true! My friend owns a boat repair business and works at the local sled shop off season and says that the new gas is the worst thing to happen to anything with a carburetor ever. Goes stale quickly and the alcohol attracts water which causes it to seperate from the petroleum base. In the marine world we use Startron or E-Zorb to keep this from happening. I really think you should check the labels on the pump a little closer the next time you fuel up, as I've only seen "formulated" in your state the last time I went there. And that was all the way to Oneonta, where I filled up before heading back down the hill to Ct. Amazing, my GMC got 13.7 mpg going up to the Adirondaks and 16.9 on the way home.
