Of course, laziness to go and get the additives is priceless!

If you can tell a difference between 87 and 89 octane on this bike at its compression level - something is wrong with your ride.
Thanks for the input Professor Smartass!

I use an additive and the good stuff as well.

running too high an octane is actually counter productive - it burns slower so produces less power and it also creates more deposits. Run the bike at the octane it was designed for - no more no less. Unless you increase the CR you don't need anything more than regular.

When your bike gets really old and coked up you might find you need mid grade to stop it pinking (pinging) - until then you are wasting money and losing power.

I guess this gets right at the heart of the question: what octane level was this engined designed to burn? On page 1.35 of the Triumph Service Manual it states the fuel type to use is U.S. 89 CLC/AKI where CLC is (RON + MON)/2.

Don't get me wrong, I would be happy to use regular gasoline (87 octane); but, I thought I read that the prevailing wisdom on this forum was to use what Triumph recommended.

The owners manual does recommend 89 octane - mid grade fuel. So, per Mick's own advice that is what you should run.

So, esentially you spend more money for premium for the additives, and then you spend even more money to add the additives again?!? Sounds logical....

Mick is correct - the bike will actually run more poorly on premium. If I am not mistaken, you can increase the heat range on your spark plugs to accomodate the cooler running fuel and eliminate the additional deposits.

If the bike makes a noise like frying eggs when accelerating on a hot day then you need a higher octane fuel. Simple.

LOL - abnormally terse for you Jim. I would have expected more of a discourse involving iso-octane and heptane levels, and their effect on pre-detonation.

You can also tell if you are running the best mix when examining the condition of your plugs. If they show pitting on the electrodes, you may need to be running higher octane fuel.

Sounds like you have some kind of "special sauce" cooking there, Al!

Some things are actually simple... but they're few and far between.

If it involves nitromethane and/or hydrazine, count me in!
