When I first got my t-bird home I noticed fuel draining from the airbox, as well as fuel in the oil when I drained it. Luckily I hadn't started it. The carbs were thouroughly cleaned and the float needles seemed to seat properly. One morning after accidently leaving the petcock open I again noticed fuel draining from the airbox drain. I promptly checked the oil and again found gas. Of course I again changed the oil.

Now I shut the petcock faithfully and let the bike run to drain down the fuel. Invariably, by the next day, the bowls have enough gas to start and run for a minute or two.

I have heard that the carbs have had trouble with bowls overfilling. With a lack of an overflow drain the gas goes into the head and back into the airbox. Is a leaky petcock also a common problem? Has there been problems with the triumph replacement? Should I replace it with an aftermarket part?

You need a nice shiny leak-free vacuum tap.

Slinky,
An interesting question.
How do you balance the carbs with one of the ports used by the petcock?

Since you have to remove the tank to balance the carbs, it is not a problem.

A small can of gas, with a hose to the carbs is needed.

See that "PRI" setting - that's "prime" it bypasses the vacuum shutoff to fill the carbs. So what you do is disconnect the vacuum line and set the petcock to prime. Then you can balance as usual even with the tank on / as your source of fuel (Personally I use a longer fuel line and use the tank remotely as my gas source when balancing the carbs).

Just remember; an awful lot of the free advice you will get on forums is worth exactly what you paid for it. There will always be somebody trying to convince you to do something really stupid, just because they did it or want to do it.

Actually you don't have to remove the tank to balance the carbs. It's easier in place for me....don't have to figure out where to balance the tank or the gas can and don't need a mile long fuel line.

Mick,
Am I wrong in seeing no actual "Off" position on the petcock?

I am lead to believe that this is from an early Kawasaki.

Do you know what model it is originally for or what the part no. might be?
