Thunderbird Windscreen / Windshield

99 Thunderbird

Can anyone recommend a particular brand? I would like one that can be easily removed, or that looks rather unobtrusive if possible.

Does anyone have one to sell?

Thanks!

Actually, I found a couple inexpensive ones on ebay. Do you think they go up high enough to be useful? Experts, please advise!

One of the more popular windshields for our bikes is the National Cycle Street Shield EX. I am trying to decide between one of those or a National Cycle Plexistar 2, or a Plexifairing 3.
I favor the looks of the Street Shield, but sometimes I want the fuller coverage of the larger screens.
Look here for applications: http://www.nationalcycle.com/

Thanks, great page with photos. Here's the link to the photos.

I must say I like the look of that F16 one. Do you think the coverage will be adequate?

The F-16 model may be adequate for just the rider alone. I did not like the "modern" lines of that particular model, but that is a personal preferance.
My passenger would like some coverage, but, as she is sitting just a bit above me, I believe that I would need a taller screen.
Look around in this forum for other threads. Most screens generate some turbulance that may or may not be easily remedied. Helmet "buffeting" is a particular concern with any wind screen. It can toss your head around and become very annoying over time. The position and angle of the screen can affect this greatly.
Some bikes (ie: V-Strom 650) have stock screens that are particularly poor in this regard.

I just installed the F-16 on my Legend last weeked and went on a 300 mile trip. I previously had the "summer screen" which provided great coverage and is relatively easy to install, but isn't as sporty a look as I am working towards, hence the F-16. Anyway, I can tell you that the F-16 sport provides very little protection in comparison to the summer screen. I haven't compared it to riding without any windshield, but it sure didn't feel like much, although it was enough to duck behind a bit during a quick rain shower since I was wearing a half helmet. The regular (non-sport) F-16 is a bit taller and should provide a bit more protection.

I love the look and will post a pic of my bike shortly tonight.

I hope this helps.

BTW, I bought it from JC Whitney

Excellent - thanks. It would be really cool if you could do a with and without comparison. I might go with the non-sport F16....still looks cool but might be a little more protection.

I ride the bike about 500 miles / year, and mostly at 50 mph on local country roads, so I just want a little more wind protection.

I really like the Dart flyscreen. Pretty cheap, too. Dart have told me they are pretty sure it`ll fit a Thunderbird, although I posted a question about it a while back and no-one on here really knew for sure. Looks like it will be great to deflect a bit of wind but probably not ideal if you are 6'5" and looking for some extreme bad weather protection!

I have the National Cycle street shield. It was on my '73 Norton (Sting) and now migrated to my 2002 T-Bird (Nikki). Worked great for Sting. Weird mounting on Nikki as I had to order 2 of the hose clamps to wrap around the forks for the lower mount. I couldn't find the size or length hose clamp at any of the local hardware stores.
On the Norton, you sit pretty high, so the street shield is needed to give reasonable coverage up high and the wind is still deflected around the knees. That's kind of nice with my old arthritic knees. With the Triumph, you sit lower "in" the bike. The Shield sits high enough to give no coverage to my knees at all. The deflector shield might be all that is needed as the larger screen doesn't cover that much more.
I have a deflector shield on order. I was going to put it on Sting, but am thinking about putting the Shield back on Sting and the Deflector on Nikki.
I'll play around and let you know.

Hi,

Although I do like the Dart Screen (and intend to use one on another bike), I do not think you can beat Triumph's Summer Screen for the Thunderbird. You should still be able to get this from your Triumph dealer (see http://www.jacklilley.com/view_part....36&part_id=231 ), if it is to your liking?

I don't think the photos do it justice, and to me the Thunderbird still looks 'naked' with it fitted.

Triumph also did a "Winter Screen", many years ago, which was identicle to the Summer Screen, but with a taller top, and used the same mounting kit. To swap this over was a two minute (four screw) straight swap, and was great for the winter commute. I have seen a couple on the UK Ebay, occassionally, and it gives an extra 6" approx height, as well as retaining the lower cover.

Ciao,
Geoff

ps "welshrob" - You may like to take a look in the album of "Readyt" (Thunderbird fitted with Dart screen - http://www.triumphrat.net/memberalbu...2/ppuser/14411 ).
