Engine won't go over 5,000 RPM's..HELP !!

I put shorty pipes on my T-bird, rode about 40 miles with them between last night and this afternoon.
I took them off tonight at about 7:30pm and put my peashooters back on. Out of nowhere my t-bird wouldn't go over 5,000 RPM's, I'd get to 5,000 and my engine starts sputtering. As I said I charged them back to stock mufflers and it still sputters at around 4,500 RPM's and won't go over 5,000 RPM's, even with the trottle held wide open.
Can anyone answer this question for me? What's the problem? Ron.

Other Motorcycle: Can't afford two!
Extra Motorcycle: Three would be insane
loosen the filler cap and see if it still does it then - if it doesn't you have a blocked tank breather or hose. Otherwise its very likely you have one of the following :

Blocked fuel filters (petcock or carb tee)
Float height incorrect (bad adjustment, or contamination of float / valve)

Bad mixture - have you changed the jets? If not they may just be partially blocked.

There could be other reasons too but this would be a good start

I also had a similar problem with my S3, after wasting some money on ignition coils and wires i decided to go through the carbs once more and I found the main jet in #3 cylinder was in the bottom of the bowl. This happened very suddeenly too. The engine got to 4800 very nicely and it was just like it hit a rev limiter hard

Possibles in no particular order of probablilty:

Dropped main jet (like Lushy says), damaged diaphragm, jammed carb needle, stuck carb slide, broken slide spring, bent/jammed slide spring.

You're going to have to pull the carbs and check them out.

Jim

Other Motorcycle: I can have two?
I agree with previous two. I had the same issue. Main jet fell in bowl. Bet my sisters dog on it.
