Throttle Cable
Just replaced the throttle cable on my 99 TBS. Was time consuming but not as difficult as I anticipated. It took me a few hours on a sunny sunday morn. Sliding the carbs back and removing the front 2 coils provided enough clearance. Was able to install the new cable to the carbs with a flat screwdriver and a pair of needle nose pliers. The job is within the scope of the average rider,.......Saved quite a bit by not taking it to the dealer. The question is...why did it fail after only 16k on a garage queen?

Mine snapped after only 13k, in two places, which made no sense when I took it apart. From what I saw when I removed the old cable I found a lot of corrosion despite my bike being garaged too. How the previous owner stored her I couldn't say as I bought my bike from a dealer.
Without being cynical, maybe it's just another example of quality British engineering?

They fail because they are crap quality cables. I replaced mine with a decent cable at 22,000klms, and have done another 100,000 since on the same cable. Find a good cable maker, don't buy those dodgy Triumph genuine parts.

it is a crappy cable and with the end on the outer casing you can't use a cable luber so i use a good teflon lube and give it a few good squirts everytime i take the carbs out . (once every month or so lol ) .
you got any better suppliers ?

Dont have any suppliers as such, I take mine to a bloke who makes cables in Brisbane. He does a lot of marine cables, and just makes the new one using the old as a sample. About half the price of triumph too. I went through a stage where I was getting through speedo cable regularly, found the all broke in the same place, down near the wheel. I put some spiralguard around it, and haven't broken one since. I figure it was getting hit by rocks. ( I regularly travel a road which has 40 klms of pea gravel)

I replaced my throttle cable on my '98 TB at 65,000km prior to going on a 3 week tour. It hadn't failed and when I checked it out it was still perfect. It pays to run a bit of light oil down them although I had only done that at 30,000km.

Ride on !

Throttle Cable
2000 t bird, 30,000kms....had cable snap halfway, looked to be original. I go to a place in Milperra N.S.W, Australia......bought 5 metres of inner cable & 6 nipples for $5.00 Australian.
Copied original, first effort was a bit short after i soldered it up....so went a fraction longer & sucess!! I figure that theres nothing wrong with the outer cable, so why change it unless horribly kinked???
Do the same with clutch cables on my womans hinckley bonnie & my meriden bonnie, but with thicker inner cable of course than a inner throttle cable.....

I guess I'm the"one in every crowd"
For my 48,000 mile service on my 2000 T'bird, I said "better put a throttle cable on it, too"
They did it when they had the carbs off and gave me back the original. I still have it as a spare - there was nothing wrong with it!
