Do I have to rejet with new mufflers?
Well, I bought the JC Whitney 12" shorty mufflers. I just finished putting them on my 2002 Thunderbird. It took me about 3 hours total. They sure are small next to the peashooters, 12" long an about 3" in diameter in the middle.
Does anyone know if I'll need to do anything with the jets, or to anything else for that matter, now that I've changed the mufflers?
Tomorrow I'll start it up and see if I'll enjoy the Thunder this Bird makes.
Ron.

You won't need to rejet until you start messing with the intake.

You shouldn't need rejetting but you and your neighbors will need earplugs and aspirin.

I don't know how you were able to install them and not fire up the bike right away.
You have amazing self control!

Just so everyone knows, I waited til 6:30 tonight before I fired her up. (The wife wouldn't let me this morning because 'WE' had things to do). My neighbors were out in their yards when I started it up. The T-bird was a little rude at idle, very different from the mild manor mufflers I removed, but cruising at 4,500 RPM's in third she was ok. I did a few passes back and forth down the rode at different RPM rages, (all in 3rd gear).
Here's what the neighbors said:
RAY- late 50's, old school ex BSA, Triumph racer from the 60's; "Jesus, you sound like all those A**hole Harley guys I always yell about. Yes, they are loud"
Dan- late 20's, into 4x4ing jeeps; "I heard you start it and take off, then I didn't hear it again til you were way down the road. It sounds great." (I cruised at 4,500 RPM's a little then opened the throttle all the way, that was what he heard).
My wife- early 40's; "It sounds horrible."
Dan was the only one with an open mind about it. I asked my wife if it really sounded bad and she said she would have to hear it again. To me it felt less restricted, and watching the tac, it was smoother and more responsive. The sound was a lot louder but not crazy loud. (I was wearing a full face helmet however). Ron.

They were working really good. Loud, but not to loud. (I had no problem hearing after I shut it off.) I did feel guilty with the throttle wide open passing people. Again, no problem with my hearing, and today I wore my half helmet with my ears exposed. Throttle responce seemed dead on, very quick from 4,000 RPM's to 7,500 RPM's. It back fired thru the pipes a lot during engine braking. They looked good to me on the T-bird and a heck of a lot lighter then the stock mufflers.
Well, I took them off tonight at about 7:30pm and put my peashooters back on. Out of nowhere my t-bird wouldn't go over 5,000 RPM's, I'd get to 5,000 RPM's and my engine starts sputtering. As I said I charged them back to stock and it still sputters at around 4,500 RPM's and won't go over 5,000 RPM's, even with the trottle held wide open.
Can anyone answer this question for me? What's the problem? Ron.
