what do I have- another muffler question

Just put my 98 Adventurer back together after replacing shifter shaft, cleaning and jetting the carbs, adjusting the valves, lubricating polishing, etc, and it runs!! While taking it apart I found it came with straight through peashooters, the famous TORs, I'm guessing. They have the warning that theya are non EPA certified. My question is, at the junction of the pipe and the muffler there is a cylindrical baffle that looks like it just slips in (or out)of the pipe. Has anyone seen this before? Is it to make TORs legal? Should I leave them in or get rid of them? No info from the PO when I bought it, he didn't even know what peashooters are.
Incidentally, I jetted down to 92.5 jets and 1and 3/4 turns out for idle mixture to compensate for the altitude, (6000 ft.). Pretty close to the same steps I used on a Kaw Concours, which worked pretty well. I'll know soon if I'm close.

chances are that you have a california bike and those are the catalytic converters . just remove them .

maybe look on the headstock lable to see if there's any mention of it being a cali bike .

if it is your bike also has a bunch of other emission related stuff too .

Woody-
don't think they are catalytic converters. They are just plain metal baffles. None of the other fuel system emission stuff is on there. Maybe I should pull off a muffler and take a picture. Thanks

Duh, I just found them in another thread, They are just aftermarket baffles sold by JC Whitney. I guess I'll pull them out and see what happens.

When you pull them out let us know how it sounds, when your ears stop ringin', that is.

Fianlly pulled the $4.99 baffles out. Some louder but much deeper tone and seems to run better. Sounds better anyway, lost the tinny sound it had before. Has anyone come up with a way to repack the TORs?

Are there removeable baffles in the standard peashooter pipes? my bike sounds a bit tame and I'd like to let the neighbours know when I leave for work in the morning

I think the standard baffles are removed with a hole saw. If you lived closer I might swap "silencers" with you and loan you a dog to annoy your neighbors in the morning.
