What's missing from this photo?
As a relatively new owner of a 99 Legend, it seems as if my license plate bracket is designed to accomodate more than just a license plate. Is the appendage above the plate for a light? If anyone can give me a clue, I'll take care of the missing part.

Looks like the same bracket as on my TBS.
The holes at the bottom are for the license plate light and the plate itself is mounted higher. ie: the bottom holes in the plate are used to mount to the bracket.
The top hole on the bracket does not do anything on mine and is behind the plate,
It maybe for different license plate mountings around the world
There is a pic of my license plate in my photo album linked below

I'm confused as to whether or not mounting the license plate lower was an attempt to conceal the missing license plate light?
Replacements don't come cheap either. (I know, I got top dollar out of my chrome one after my fender chop )

The license plate mounts higher and the bottom oval is where the license plate light goes.
I'm not sure about Michigan, but here in PA the vehicle won't pass inspection without a light to illuminate the license plate.

Jwolf,
On my wife's T-bird I removed that piece of junk tag holder and replaced it with a Kuryakyn universal tag holder. It has a slight curve but really dressed up that area of the fender and did not need any modification to mount. Definately worth the 50 or so dollars that it cost from a local indy shop. Just my 2-cents worth.

Mine came with an alloy plate, about 15 x 20cm, which fitted the bracket and the number plate was attached to the front of it. It`s possible that it was an add on by the previous owner but it looks like it belongs there.

Had the same thing
Had the same thing, had an oval license plate light on it and some reflectors on the side, with the plate a little higher, until I asked my wife to ease up on the aux stand handle one time and she just let go and shattered the light, since then removed and disassembled the whole thing, then only re-attached the plate necessary to hold the license plate; looks a lot cleaner, though I'm not sure about the regulations...

As BM says, the licence plate should have been installed higher, the licence plate light is missing. I would have thought that light was mandatory everywhere ?

Thanks to all - what was once a mystery is solved. I have moved the plate up to the higher position and ordered the light from BikeBandit that was meant to be mounted under the plate.
