Igniter rebuild

Hi all,

I've got a 99 Legend with non-firing cylinder and we've narrowed it down to a bad igniter. I searched around Google and found a company that says they can rebuild one for $229 with a 3 year warranty:

http://www.autoecu.com/index.php

It's not listed on their site, I sent an email and that was the price they gave me. Any thoughts? I'm not sure what the going rate on igniter rebuilds is, but this sounds a lot better than shelling out $700 for a new one. Has anyone had any dealings with this company in the past? Thanks in advance.

Are you sure it is the igniter and not the coils? I can't remember the name of those aftermarket coils everyone uses...I'll get back to you...I do know they are approx $65/ea.

Nology coils...I would bet it is the coils, not the igniter.

All the coils were replaced with Nologys about a year ago. The battery was a little weak so I replaced it with a glass mat variety from the local parts store. The plug wires all ohm out fine. I haven't checked the crank trigger yet but the side cover is being a real pain to get off and I'm thinking none of the coils would fire if that was having problems?

Sounds like a good deal to me if you can't find one from a wrecker, they usually go for around $125. I remember someone on here having one repaired by an Australian company, but I don't remember who they were or what they paid.

Do try to swap in a good igniter first though, just to make sure.

I have a spare (that I'm only willing to part with temporarilly) if you're near PA.

did you swap the coils around to be sure... i mean if you move #1 to #3 position...and the missfire follows...then you know for sure....just trying to save you some $$$ ...Tom

definitely double check the coils - I'm not saying it can't happen but I havent heard of the ignitors going in this fashion - usually they either work or they don't. Double check the coils and the wiring harness / connectors before shelling out the big bucks. Also contact triumph-ant in the UK for a price on a used / rebuilt one. Your assumption that if the pickup was faulty that you would fire on none is correct.

I've seen used ECU / igniter boxes on eBay for less than $100. You can use one of of any of the 885cc bikes - Daytona, Speed Triple, Sprint, etc.

There's an igniter on e-bay ATM.

But it says is for the later types, mine is vin022991, so would this fit earlier type series?

What did they change on the later models, timing?

Here's the advert...

Will someone explain in 100 words or less what the function of the "igniter" is?
