Steering bearing substitute?
Hey all,
Is there a lower steering head bearing that will fit a 98 TBS (all TB's should be the same part # I believe) other than one provided by Triumph, such as a Kawasaki etc? Seeing as most bearings for similar Jap bikes run about $15 - $20, the $46 for the Triumph part is a bit hard to swallow. I’m hoping this is one of those parts they managed to scavenge from another bike out there.
Once again, any help would be appreciated.

There is a 'Parts interchangeability' thread in the Workshop forum.
It is a LONG thread but it is worth going through as there is lots of good info in there.

If you can get yours out in one (actually 2) pieces, you can usually have it matched up at any bearing supplier for 1/2 the OEM cost. There are usually very small numbers on the outer race and the inner cone that can often be cross referenced. This can also be done if you can provide dimensions (outer diameter, inner diameter, height).
Sorry, but I have gotten that far with my bike yet.

Thanks for the advice,
Cut it off and had it matched by a local bearing place. Triumph OEM = $46, same part via the supplier = $15.
Some times I wonder.
Thanks all!

Not a problem,
I'll add the info to the 'parts interchangeability' well, but it's a commonly available 30mm tapered roller bearing by KOYO. The KOYO part number is 32006JR. The Seal under the bearing is also a KOYO part number 32006JRRS-2.
As I stated before, the bearing was only $15 as compared to $46 at the local Triumph dealership
Have a good one guys!

Thank you! Do you have any idea if the upper bearing/seal are the same numbers? Just curious.

I don't think so,
I can check when I get home tonight as I believe the part number is exposed, but from what I recall, it didn't look the same.
