new to forum; 5000 m on 2001 legend tt
getting 30-35 mile/gallon on my 2001 legend tt with 20,000 miles, 5000 of them mine since Dec. Is this gas mileage typical? I hate the limited range and cost. I'm reading up on the various tuning and carb threads. I have to do a post to subscribe to this thread as well.

this will depend in some part on how hard you are riding, but I am getting 40 - 43. Yours seems low.

I typically fill up at 100 miles and put 2 - 2.5 gals in the tank.

I would agree that 30-35 MPG seems low. Mine went from 35 to over 40 when I drilled the airbox and jetted the carbs. I think mine was running rich before I did that. The cool thing is has more power too. It has a very noticable intake noise now. I like that noise! Is this stop-and-go or cruising?

Pre-mod I used to get 50-52 mpg from my Legend, now after mods I'm getting 42-43 mpg. Part of it is due to me enjoying the new power and riding kind of hard. Your mileage seems pretty low for a stock Legend, when is the last time it was tuned up?

I pulled the carbs and noted 98 main jets and standard needles. The airbox is stock; the airfilter is thin foam and not clogged. When running very hard, the mileage goes down to as low as 28. The bike does not want to pull revs above 5,500 with a huge falloff in power. Luckily with the engine torque I can pull plenty of speed to keep up with my friends in the curves as well as kill the gas mileage. Top speed is about 95 because of its refusal to pull more revs. Turning on the choke at speed does not hugely effect the revs though when I turn it back off, it does rev a bit better. I'm thinking the first or next step is to increase the main jets to??
Whats my most reasonable source for buying jets in the US?

this is a long and variable issue. Check out the threads listed in the "proven set ups". There are a lot of variables by changing jets/filters and it can be a trying experiece. To be honest there seems to be no accepted range other than 35-50 depending on your set up and how your riding. It does seems like you have an issue and the fact that you have good pull/acceleration up to 5500K, this sounds like your mains might be plugged up. Your pilots would affect sooner although if your mains are gummed up my guess is that your pilots are not far behind. It's not a big job to pull the carbs/filter and will make a world of differnce. Anyhow, check out the threads in regards to this isuse as there are many and a ton of great info. Good luck!

A couple questions first.
Where do you live/what's the altitude?
Does this happen at full throttle or small throttle?
When you checked the air filter, did you also check the airbox under the seat for foreign objects?
Get back to us with those answers and we'll take it from there.

I agree with Patrol...if loss of power happens at 5500...you got other issues besides gas mileage. You may even have loose or mains missing, etc. I get 45-52 miles/gallon, and I have mods. Setup is in the proven setups thread. Wait till you get it running right, you'll be pleased.
