Fuel filter?

Put my gaiters on yesterday. Look awesome. Decided to go exploring under the gas tank. Noticed the fuel line from tank to carbs has no fuel filter. Is this normal? Also, I have never seen a bike with an air filter that is so difficult to replace. Do carbs have to be moved to replace air filter? Routine maintenance looks like it will be a little challenging.

There's a mesh filter in the fuel tank and a duckbill filter in the T where the fuel line connects into the carbs.

I've added a small filter into the fuel line that I use as an indicator more than anything else -- if there's junk in it, I'm in trouble!

There's a pic in my album under 'Carbs, Intake and Fuel System' so use the clicky below to take a look.

Yep. It's a PITA and you do have to remove the carbs to get the filter out.

Remove the tank, remove the side covers, remove the left side airbox, remove the plastic trim strip that's attached to the coils, loosen the clamps on both sides of the carbs, pull the carbs and filter box back as an assembly, push the carbs off the filter box, slide the carbs out the left side, push the filter box forward and remove it.

Simple, huh?

It's pretty straightforward after you've done it a couple of times and gotten the hose clamp screws unstuck.

also when pulling the carbs it's way easier to undo the throttle cable at the throttle end rather than the carb end .

sounds like a pita , but after you've done it once you can get them off in less than one beer ;-)

good chance to clean out the float bowls and jets . maybe even check the float heights .jimmyj900 did a great write up on float height here http://www.triumphrat.net/hinckley-c...at-height.html

Thanks guys. I'm definitely going to add a small gas filter.
