Starter problems

My ´98 Legend won't start after winter :-(
At first it kicked to life but then died. the starter turned at first, but slower and slower and now it hardly turns at all.
I first suspected the battery but it is ok, I've charged and checked with a voltmeter.
Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong with my darling bike?
Could it be the starter motor?
Does anyone have a link to a good manual/tutorial on the Legend?

Hmm... you sure your battery is holding charge? I would take it to a parts store and have them check it. After winter, that is the most likely culprit.

The sprag clutch issue generally does not affect this year Classic, and it perpetuates itself with a loud clattering like a weak battery/solenoid.

Thanks for the tip

Thanks for the input.
I will look into it. I am very sure the battery itself is not the problem here. Fortunately it's still winter here in Sweden and I still have some time to fix the problem.

"I am very sure the battery itself is not the problem here." don't be . these bikes like a good battery and then some . batteries that will seemingly crank the motor well might not have enough to spark it too .

also the charging systems on these bikes like to cook the batteries . having to top off the water can be a bi-weekly chore .

before you go throwing a lot of money and time into it , a new AGM battery only costs $65 .

the same problem

Just jumped through that hoop myself.

Optimate3 told me my battery was ok. Multimeter told me it was holding 13v fully charged but the starting motor would only turn slowly or not at all.

Bought a new battery for £35 and the bike starts first time everytime.

Still use the old battery with an old headlamp as an inspection lamp.

So your old battery might hold the correct volts but not have the power to start your bike.

It was the battery!

I have to hand it to you. It was the battery. I just changed it after much frustration and now the starter engine runs the way it should. I haven't actually got my darling running just yet, but I see no reason why she shouldn't get going once the weather gets better here in Sweden.
Thank you all for your input.

I am a little curious as to why you would not suspect the battery?
If all was aworking well when you put the bike away, what would cause the starter to all of a sudden not work in the spring?
You do not need to make mountains out of mole hills with these bikes.

A good battery is the most important issue in keeping the t3's running. I tried starting my bike with what I thought was a good Varta battery on the w'end to no avail. As a back up, I had bought a Yuasa and had it on the opti-mate for a few days, hooked it up and the bike started in seconds. A tip when using the opti-mate.... switch it off-on when it shows green. This puts it in charge mode again,do it several times.Makes a big difference
ps...does anyone know why Triumph didn't put a more powerful battery in the t3's?
