Well, I can confirm needle jet wear as a problem on the Mikunis but not having seen your jets or needles I can't say that's your problem. There's also a problem with wear on the plastic slides that I think may account for some of the needle rubbing, but I can't verify that since I don't have a set of Miks to play with.

Feeling a bit loathe to be buying new parts for these mikunis to last how long (?), I took a look on ebay & my luck was in, just bought a set of Keihins off a legend for ~ $150 .

The Keihins are better built than the Miks and much more durable. I'm there's a difference in the inlet and outlet diameters so you'll have to change to the rubbers for a 2000 model, but that's the only installation difference I'm aware of.

I'm thinking I should be ok with stock jetting for now on the Keihins with K&N in stock airbox & thunderbike 3-1, but looking at your previous posts (& others too) I think I'll want to play later with some mods & factorypro or thrux needles

You might want to go up a step (98 to 100) on the main jets, but don't bother with the Thruxton needles unless you change the cams. It will be too rich on the bottom end otherwise.

BTW, you recall I was having carb setup problems with tickover speed ? Turns out the tach was faulty, high by 3/400 rpm - now have a trophy clock set (ebay 40 bucks! -complete with water temp gauge) & no probs carb setting..

Cool!
