Fatter spoke rims?

Does anyone know what kind of wheels would fit the TBS in a spoke design that would offer a 180 on the rear? Possibly something used from an older bike?
I was thinking of going with some used daytona wheels but I really like blacked out spoke rims on the TBS.

Any ideas?

Much appreciated.

Hi,

A company called SBF in Germany (www.sbf-triumphparts.de) use to offer a 5.50 x 17" 40-spoke rear wheel for the Thunderbird Sport. 5.50 x 17" is the same size as the Daytona. I don't know if this was fitted with a 180 or 170 (fyi, a 170 was standard on the Sprint & Trophy, while a 180 was standard on the Speed Triple & Daytona, using the same Brembo rim).

I don't know of another bolt on solution, and I think you may need to explore having an oversized rim put onto an existing hub. I would try emailing Gem at CWC here in the UK (see their site: http://www.central-wheel.co.uk/). CWC built the wheels for Triumph, and offer a rebuild, special build, and spares service. I am sure they can offer a matching rim, new stronger spokes, and either build or supply the parts for a local US build, etc....

None of the above options are cheap!

Ciao,
Geoff

It would certainly be easier to have a custom wider rim laced onto your hub than it would be to fit a completely different rear wheel.

I just ordered a new 5.5" Akront rim from www.billetboys.com. Planning on having Buchanan Spoke & Rim lace it up to my existing hub. I'll let you know how it works out.

Ordered the rims & spokes from Buchanan Spoke & Rim and had a friend lace them. Not cheap, Not easy, but I've got a "200" on the rear and a 130 on the front. (200 is in quotes because it is actually only 187mm wide, only 1mm wider than an Avon 180). Went with 17's but if I had it to do over again, I'd probably go with a 16 or 18 rear and a taller front. It's still a work in progress.

wow thanks for the replies guys.

I really dig your photos of the spokes with fatter tires. I need to get a quote on lacing the hubs with larger rims. My favorite look are spokes on black rims.

I found a deal that I couldn't pass up on ebay this week. I bought a rear Daytona 1200 95' black mag wheel. So I'm going to try that out for now. But it would be great to have both options.

Now I just need to research a 180 tire!

FYI... I also need a daytona front wheel to match. If you all see one please pass it my way.

Note that you will have rear brake issues with the 'tona rear wheel as that bike used a much smaller rotor. Ideally you need to swap to an early trophy rear brake setup, pics in my photo album. However, you can buy an oversized rotor that will make the existing caliper setup work - I cant exactly remember who does them, triumph-ant and sprint manufacturing in the UK spring to mind though.
