Unhappy Shorting out

Help guys, just spent the last two hours trying to find a short after fork overhaul on my 98 tbird.
Everything was fine before,I stripped the front end down every thing came off forks, yolks, clocks headlight the whole shibang.I replaced head race bearings and polished the yolks
the forks have been overhauled with new springs oil and seals Oh and a set of gaiters i polished the fork legs and gave everything a good old clean. Now for the problem i have fitted everything back in its rightfull place except the headlight because i wanted to test that everything works as it should but guess wot i have a short.
Problem is even with everything disconnected from within the headlight the 10amp fuse marked AUX keeps blowing, I have checked all the wiring within the headlight and carn't find anything however the fuse will stay in if i disconnect the sidestand switch.

Any ideas
Thanks EDE

I tidied up the headlight wiring on my 98 tbird recently & noticed that it's possible to swop 2 of the connectors, coloured white on mine. As the wires are not consistently coloured on each side (m/f) of these connectors I did a bit of head scratching with the Haynes wiring diagram before being sure which was which. If you don't have a knitting pattern (wiring diag) have a look at the thickness of the wires - they should be consistent across the connectors. if you still have problems, I'll take a look at mine tomorrow & post the wire colours for each connector. (Dark at the moment here!)

Angry

Hi mike, I tried that and found if you got them cross connected the indicators wouldn't work, it doesn't seem to be a connection problem more like a live going to eath a good tip is to disconnect the earth from the battery and slot an iluminated test screwdriver to the eath on the battery and croc clip to the eath lead this will light up if there is a short, and my problem is this will only go out with the side stand switch disconnected.

Thanks Ede.

the sidestand work around suggests to me its either the clutch switch or the ignition switch pigtails that you should be looking at. Also take a close look at where the main harness runs by the headstock and into the shell it can wear in both places

+1

Just thought I'd mention here a handy product I came across for wrapping wires & looms to protect from abrasion etc, better than plastic electrical tape...

..plumbing tape, bought from B & Q diy store. It's a self amalgamating thin rubber tape, but not messy at all - no sh**y glue all over as when you have to remove electrical tape later to check something.

It's supposed to fix pipe leaks, at least temporarily, so could also be used for...er....plumbing

It comes in two flavors: silicon-based and rubber.

The silicon version lasts forever but the rubber stuff is very vulnerable to ozone, air polution and sunlight. It tends to crack and/or melt pretty quickly when exposed to open air.

There's also an electrical version available.
