T3 ignitor T1290066

I am in the process of getting an ECU from a 900 Trophy in order to extend the red line on my 04 TBS. I have read through many threads regarding performance upgrades but don't recall anyone giving their opinion on this modification. I have the S3 cams, D&D exhaust, and 12:1 pistons. My assumption is that the engine will continue to pull strong past the current 8700 red line right on through to the new 9500 red line. Can anyone provide some feedback regarding this issue?

From what I have read, that is correct, and those who have done these changes have been very pleased.

You do not mention your airbox and carburettors? I would have thought you needed to open up the airflow and rejet to take advantage of the higher revs?

From memory, the sidestand wiring may be different to that originally fitted?

I use those extra RPMs more often than I should.

I'm running a S3 ignitor with 955 Sprint cams.
The sportier cams only start to come alive in the upper midrange, so the stock rev limiter cuts them off just when the bike is pulling it's hardest. It gets a little scary (thrilling ) in those upper ranges.

You didn't mention if you had the D&D 3>3 or 3>2 slipons.
I had some issues with my 3>3 setup. The rev limiter didn't seem to make as big of a difference until I got a 3>1 and got the jetting dialed in.

Thanks for the responses. Air box has been modified and the carbs have been re-jet. I have the 3 to 3 pipes and I really like the look but from what I have read the 3 to 1 gets you higher performance. I will let you know how things go.

As much as I complained about the 3>3, I miss the outrageous look and sound of them. The bike looked a lot more unique with them.

I am anxious to replace the 04 stock igniter with the new one. I should be able to work on that next weekend as it should arrive in the next couple of days. I am hoping the ECU is under the seat and not under the tank. I will probably have some installation challenges as well since I don't think the two units are exactly the same. And then, I am wondering what problems I might encounter with the side stand. I may be asking for some help or opinions down the road.

Its mounted to the front of the battery box. Check the wiring codes carefully before you connect it up. Also, if its not too late, check that your main harness plugs into a pigtail from the unit and not directly into it. Late legends (and maybe other models) had a totally different unit that was not compatible with the earlier ones (very similar to that used on the bonneville). If thats the case the easiest solution may be to to swap your harness for one from an earlier bike.

Mick,

Thanks for that information. I was just checking my 04 TBS and found the 1290076 ECU in front of the battery as you indicated. I also noticed that the main harness does plug directly into the current ECU. I had checked this earlier with the Triumph dealer and they indicated that it would be a direct plug in replacement. Looks like this may not be the case. I will check this with the dealer thoroughly before trying to plug the 1290066 ECU in....

If it doesn't fire up, get ahold of a wiring diagram for your bike and the bike the igniter came from. Different models were wired different ways, but here is what I encountered when installing an old (95 IIRC) Speed Triple ignitor in my 2000 Thunderbird:

My Thunderbird had the neutral and sidestand swtiches on one circuit with one wire running to the igniter. The S3 had two seperate circuits, with two seperate wires going to the igniter for each switch.

The quickest fix is to jump the green and grey wires on the igniter, so that both wires are grounded when the switches are closed.
A side affect is that the neutral light stays on when the sidestand is up. When the sidestand is down, it functions as it should.

I haven't taken the time to work out a better solution yet.

Another issue was that the older igniter was thicker and a difficult fit.
I modified the battery tray. A better solution might be relocating it to the auxillary airbox.

Thanks for the information, it should be very helpful. I think there is room for mounting so it should be a matter getting the wiring straight. Working with my Triumph friends to get the wiring diagrams and if needed any modifications to complete the installation. Can't wait for the weekend to get started. Will let you know how it goes.
