Fork Oil

i'm about to overhaul my forks and install progressive springs . the factory service manual specs sae 10w-20 .

my local jap bike dealer only has 10w (yes this dealer sucks) .

opinions please i can always mail order .

ALSO how much do i need to get ? the manuals only give height spec , not quantity .

thanks

fork oil

I used 15W from the bmw dealer. I had to then open up the damping quite a bit (TBS). I think a quart is just enough - don't spill much!

Have you seen this article:

Are you adding fork gaiters while you are in there?

Fork Oil

It is possible to obtain a multi grade fork oil but I genuinely believe the Haynes Manual has got it wrong in respect to our scoots. I used a 15wt oil after re-newing seals and bushes. Huge difference, to the better, in handling and front end dive. Three x 1 litre bottles of Morris Fork Oil did the deed, and it must be measured into the sliders as per the Manual. This is to equalise the amounts between both sliders and thus have both sets of forks working in exact unison.

I also used 15WT and measuring is apparently the only way to get it right. Worth it in the long run as the progressives and the oil make a huge difference. Now you'll want to do the back end too!
