Idle adjuster

This net really helped me out back in November when I rebuilt the Mikunis on my '96 Adventurer, replaced the inlet rubbers and the stock air filter. The bike runs great now, but the idle adjuster now has no effect. Did some kind of flexible joint slip off the adjuster screw at the carb or what. Can this connection be checked with the carbs on the bike, or must I tear down one more time?

I've just set up my Tbird Mikunis after fitting K&N (to stock airbox), dynojet & thunderbike 3-1 pipes.

Had great difficulty getting even a low-ish tickover speed, 1200rpm.

The centre carb is the 'master' - directly opened by the throttle cable & the idle adjuster. I was starting the balance by backing off the outer two carbs - a little, or it will barely tick over at all. The idea being that as the outer 2 are brought 'up' to balance with the middle, the idle adjuster is backed off to lower idle speed back to spec.

Snag was on mine that the centre carb would not close off enough to give me a low enough starting point - I could push the lever which the throttle cable attaches to & drop the tickover (idle adjuster backed off) but it would just spring back open again even with plenty of cable slack. I presume the engine suction tends to open the butterflies, which are only held closed by the shaft spring on the centre carb (next to where the cable attaches).

The spring on mine was a bit corroded & looked like the coils were 'stuck' together, so i dropped a bit of light oil on it & worked it into the coils.

This meant I could get a tickover of 1200rpm (ie where the idle adjuster 'starts') down from 1400 minimum before.

Probably the spring is a bit weak also - it's 10yrs old & has to do more than just spring the throttle cable back (lubricating which would probably help too- reduce what the spring has to do)

I'm ok for now, as my set-up seems very good aside from tickover speed & like yours, maybe, an idle adjuster that can only go one way - up.

Question for you - is that the unrestricted inlet rubbers you have ? (I've tweaked the stock rubbers a bit)Thinking about this as a future mod & would very interested to hear what jets, float height & pilot screws settings you're using ?

Hope this helps

Mike

Been thinking about the lack of idle adjustment on your bike (and IrlMike's) and one situation that will cause your problem is if the throttle cable adjustment is actually setting your idle and the idle knob is turned too far counter-clockwise.

Check for slack in your throttle cable first. There should be some free movement in the throttle grip before the cable goes tight and moves the throttle linkage.

If there's no slack, try turning the idle adjustment knob clockwise and see if you get an increase in the idle. If it just spins then you've probably unscrewed it from the linkage and will need to pull the carbs to reattach it.

Yes, I installed the unrestricted rubbers and the K&N filter. The bike had the off-road peashooters exhausts on it when I bought it in '99. When I cleaned up my Mikunis, I found the needles were #139 and were set with the criclip on the 3rd slot. I moved them up to the 4th slot. My main jets were #90, and the pilots were #40. The mixture screws were set at 2 1/2 turns out.

Thanks for the info. Looks like no big change in carburation needed, just a needle slot & maybe a little richer on the pilot screws if I read that right - good to know, cheers
