New Triumph owner... hopefully
Hello all,
I've been doing some research and came across this site. It looks like a great site so I decided to join.
A co-worker of mine is selling a 2002 Triumph Thunderbird (10,000 miles).
He's offering to sell it to me for $1000. Here's the catch. He dropped it a little over a year ago, rode it home, and hasn't touched it since. It's been sitting in a garge collecting dust. It has minor cosmetic damage (Bent brake lever, bent handlebar, scratched exhaust) but he assured me it was running perfectly before he put it away. He didnt put any fuel stabilizer in the gas or anything.
So I'm thinking of buying it but I know I'll have to drain the gas, and clean out the tank and carbs as well as change all the fluids. I'm just wondering if it's even worth it. Opinions would be greatly appreciated. As well as stuff I should be looking out for when I take a look at the bike this weekend.
Thanks!

Which side did he drop it on. If it was the left be sure to check that the gear selector shaft has not broken off, it is common on these bikes. With that said I would not allow it to prevent you from getting the bike as it sounds like a good deal.

Gee, *I'll* buy it!
Seriously, it sounds like a very good deal. You really can't go wrong if he is being honest with you about its past.
As you can read here, in this forum, we are mostly all very happy with the Thunderbird series. They are getting a bit rare, and they are great motorcycles in terms of performance, looks, and reliability. No, they will not leap out from under you or snap up a 3rd gear wheelie, but the spread of torque is infectious and they spark conversation and draw attention (in a *good* way) wherever they are found.

He dropped it on the right side. I'm going to take a look at it this weekend. He's a co-worker of mine and I'd like to think we're friends so I think he's being pretty honest. Definately a cool looking bike. I'm going to take a closer look at it this weekend. It's been sitting in a garage (uncovered) collecting dust.

Welcome to the site Frank
Seriously, if the bike is as described and you decide you don't want it, I'll take it for a grand.
That's a deal!

Are you kidding me? A 2002 tbird for a grand? What a deal what with dropping it on its right side and all. Can't do too much damage by dropping it on that side. I know. I dropped my Legend on its right side and have put 45000 miles on it since. It took about $100 to fix the lever and head light ear. 2002 was a very good year for Triumphs. Go for it. Good thing you don't have your hometown listed.Someone would be trying to find out where you and it is and buy it out from under you. Just kidding. But it sounds like a very good buy. It would be worth a bundle parting it out. But what a shame that would be with them becoming scarcer each year. Just a thought.
