Warning! Factory Airboxes now threadlocked

For those thinking of fitting K & N filters to a new Airbox, as I just have, because all the plastic / brass insert screw points were split n knackered....read on.

My new Airbox came with every single philips head screw so tightly threadlocked (glued ?) that the inserts just turned in the plastic. Even if you just want clean and re-oil a stock filter, it seems Triumph are out to stop you doing that.

After a few a choice words doubting the parentage of the muppets who came up with this idea, here's what I did -

First hacksawed the philips screw heads off, trying not to damage the plastic too much. (A power grinder would probably just melt all to mush...)

With the halves separated the screw shafts are then exposed - still no joy applying mole grips to remove the b*****s.

So, I hooked up a power drill to each one, spun it loose & pulled it out complete with insert. (Easy to do) Then used nine allen screws with washers & nylock nuts to bolt the two halves back together (with K&N inserted). (Just happened to have some stainless ones lying around from a fleabay pack.)

Hope this helps you avoid some hassle, or at least know what you're getting into

Bike is 98 Tbird btw

Mike

Yeah, I got yer air box right heah

Man, I'm getting so tired of hearing about that %#@!* airbox! I'm gonna fit mine to accept a pair of flippin' Briggs and Stratton filters from Lowes. I mean how complicated can clean air get! I bet I could even knife off a hunk of grandma's rancid foam rubber mattress, rub some used motor oil into it, jam it into that dam box and it would work just fine--maybe better!

That wasn't really a problem on my Trophy airbox.

I just pulled out the inserts, ran a thread tap through to clean them out and then stuck them back in the holes they came out of. Since the plastic was cracked there I was able to 'weld' it back together with a soldering iron.

I think I used some sheet metal screws in the non-insert locations.

Factory airboxes

I read some time ago about a guy taking out the airbox ,disassembling it and CUTTING the rear into 2 pices(Rt&Lf) , then the next time for service , no more complete removal ,just each rear 1/2 ,and no more P.I.A.
