Question 99 Legend tires - tube or tubeless?

Today I became the proud owner of a 99 Legend - and will need to pull advice from those of you who are experienced owners of this bike.
The tires need replacing, but for some reason I have the impression that
all spoked wheels require a tube type tire. The bike currently has tubeless type tires. The manual seems silent except to give the size of tires. Is there a definitive answer on this?
Also, any consensus on which brand and model to go with?

Congrats on the Legend! You're going to love the bike.

The tires are tubeless-type, but mounted on the Legend rims they require a tube (because of the spokes). It's perfectly fine to use a tube on tubeless tires.

I currently have Avons on my Tbird and I think they are great tires. I have the Storm-ST on the front and the Azaro-ST on the back (Avon's recommendation). For the Legend I think Avon suggests Storm-STs for both

I had the Michelin Macadams on before this pair and I didn't like them. They were very noisy at speed.

Thanks for the info

That is what makes this a great place. Quick, simple explanations that are helpful to a novice like me.
I have read on this board that many are using the Avons and it will likely be
my tire of choice when the snow melts and I can get her down to the dealer.
Thanks again,
Jim

99 Legend tires - tube or tubeless?

Tubes mate...due to the classy looking spoked wheels. Congrats on the Legend - you are now among the elite. BTW: The Legend will rock your world ! I have a 2000 model

Agreed - tubes. I replaced the Bridgestones that were on my Legend with a set of Avon Storms. Much better!

I installed Metzeler Lazertec's on my T-Bird and really like the traction in both dry and wet conditions.

Great bike! Make sure you post pics when you get a change.

There aren't alot of the Classic Triples out there, especially Legends, so be prepared to answer alot of questions. You'll see what I'm talking about soon enough!

You've found the right place for answers to just about any question you'll have.

jwolf,

Congrats on the 'new' Legend. Was it the one in Gobles that was on eBay? Looks like a nice one. I've owned a 99 Legend for a couple of years now and put a set of Storm STs on it last summer. I like them better than the Bridgestone Battlax that were on it before. The Avons grip better, especially during cornering.

Also, when I got a nail in the rear tire last September, I found out that Avon has a full, free replacement Road Hazard Warranty on these tires. They shipped me a brand new one for nada.

By the way, I've got a few extra Legend bits and can point you to a good place for service, if you are interested.

I talked to a shop on the west coast that would seal a rim so tubeless tires (tyres?) could be used on a spoked rim. Anyone out there tried it?

My friend and Triumph mechanic of 40 years (and proud owner of TWO Legends) sealed the spoked rims on his bike and has never had any problems.
