97 Adventurer - stuck gear change

Riding for first time in two weeks due to nasty weather, I was 2 miles from home when the gear change failed. It feels like the return spring has gone - i.e. if I press my foot down it changes then stays there - I have to physically lift it back up in order to depress it again.

I will no doubt pay a fortune to a rip-off UK Triumph dealer but wondered what other people experiences may be? Anyone else with this trouble?

Dang - I was just telling the wife how inexpensive this motorcycling hobby was!

IMO-The return spring is very weak to begin with (compared to all of the Japanese bikes I have ridden). Make sure that your shift lever is not rubbing abainst the case, or something simple like that. IIRC- It is not a big deal to replace the spring, but I may be wrong here. On most bikes it does not require splitting the cases. I wouldn't mind swapping it out for a stronger one....

Yeah - a guy at the local Triumph club reckons that they have members who have split a gearbox before now and may well help.
I am desperately hoping that it wont be expensive!

The gear changer rod on my 2000 Legend was replaced this summer. That involved opening the gear box. This seemed to be too much for the service department at MotoPlex in Joliet Illinois. It took weeks to get my bike back. The good news is that it looks like MotoPlex is no longer a Triumph dealer.

Replacing the entire shift shaft is very different from just replacing the spring. The spring is usually just behind the pawl on the end of the shaft, but, again, I have not had mine apart to check.
