Keihin carb vent hoses????? help

I have a 99 THunderbird. I have cleaned the carbs and put it back together. In the process I took out the California crap (hoses, valves, more hoses, and canisters). My bike is lighter now? Anyway, the vent hoses from the carbs used to go up to some solenoids above the carbs and below the gas tank.

My question is where to the carb vent hoses go on a non-California triple?

When I hooked the two vents together it would run a little while and then die. When they are open to the atmosphere, all seems well but I am not sure that it is ok to leave it that way.

The vent hoses on a non-Cal bike are about 1-1/2 feet long and go up from the carb connections and over the crossbar under the seat. They then go straight down by the shock.

When you connected the hoses together you prevented atmospheric pressure from getting into the float bowls and confused the snot out of the carbs.
