Finally solved the missing/hesitation - 99 Legend

I have been soliciting advice (which has been very helpful) from this board while trying to solve a missing and hesitation at low revs problem on my new to me 1999 Legend TT with 17,000 miles on it.

I stripped down the carburettors. In the process I found the mouse nest in the airbox (pictures in an earlier thread) - and was certain that was the cause - generating grit that was maybe blocking the jets. Spent hours on it - and nothing improved - just as much missing as before.

I knew I had the dreaded alternator rattle - so I went ahead and pulled the alternator and fixed it for now -it may loosen up again but it is not that big a deal to pull apart. Changed the plugs and set the gaps while I was in there. Again no improvement - thought I enjoy the absence of that rattle.

I noted that the bike had original Gil coils and read the "known problem" stuff on the board wth those coils. I ordered Nology coils which arrived yesterday and this morning changed out all three coils in about 15 minutes - straight swap. Bike is running perfectly - problem solved. Thanks to all the posters who helped along the way and the efficient people at Nology who know their stuff.

I am wondering whether I should test the Gil coils (is that even possible?) and keep them if they test out or just toss them.

You can test the Gill coils by hooking them back up and sticking a plug in the end of the plug wire and grounding it, leaving it out of the cylinder and starting the bike, then just look and see if it has a consistent spark. If not then throw it away. I threw all of mine away rather than fool with it....

Other Motorcycle: I can have two?
Good deal, I was wondering about my '01 Legend myself, with the same issue. Was wrestling whether to get the coils, now I might just have to. The nology ones are about $65 cheaper than the Triumph ones...

They were $68 each and $7 total for shipping UPS Ground to Missouri. Order placed by phone on Monday, invoice and receipt in the mail Friday and product delivered Monday.

So your tach still works, that's great. I did Nology swap a couple of years ago and then my tach stopped working. I wonder if the newer Nology's are different.

Yep the tach still works. I had read of folks who had to do modifications to connectors and was expecting more trouble - but the coils they sent me were plug and play for the Triumph Legend so maybe these are a newer version. The only visible difference is that they are fatter, and are marked with the manufacturer and "Made in Germany". I don't think the fundamental equation regarding electrics made in England versus electrics made in Germany has changed since my long ago youth!

mice like the air box

I had let my bike sit for months. When I started fixing stuff I took the air box off to get the carbs out and heard something rattling in the air box. I could not believe it when i got it open and their was half a cup of sunflower seeds and mouse turds. Anyone know of a good way to keep them from wanting to get in their? My first thought was something along the line of fox urine but I just could not put piss on my bike....lol

I hope you washed out the filter box -- mouse whiz isn't real good for carburetors...

How about some 1/4" hardware cloth hot glued into the intake? Minimum airflow disruption and quite mouse resistant.

Also check the bottom of the airbox under the seat to be sure the critters haven't been chewing a back door into the system.
