Any idea as to what would cause the tach needle to bounce a lot? '97 Adventurer
Sometimes, the idle seems like it is going up and down ever so slightly. I can hear it and see it on the tach. Is that normal?
It also seems that at speeds, I notice when the needle bounces I can feel it in the bike...like if I were hitting wind pockets...just noticable. (maybe me worrying about it??)
The bike seems to run fine, no hesitation, no stalling, not overheating, no smoke at all from the exhausts and all the fluids are level.
I have not had a chance to check the plugs or change the air filter.
The battery is new.

Yep, first part sounds like a carb sync.
As for the bouncy needle, some folks will tell you that it is going bad. BUT, I took mine apart and cleaned it and this went away. I assume it had developed a bad ground due to being dirty.

Yup, if you feel it in the bike, it's not the tach that has a problem. It could be a failing coil.

Can the idle being too high cause any of these symptoms? It was at 1250-1300. I moved it back down to 1000 and it seems to be some what better. May be a combo of issues??? I will post back after I ride home this evening from work.

Hi
I had the same question but it is only occasional at higher than idel( 4000-5500rpm). To show my ignorance(old bike knowledge), it was stated that it could be cleaned? Not wanting to open a jack in the box......any info on that printed?
Thanks

Diagnosing long distance is never easy ,but if you check the coils and they are fine while you have the tank off check the inline fuel filter at the bottom of the fuel line right between carbs 2&3. Its a small cone shaped screen that can sometimes be gunked up. I had that problem and it caused a jumpy tach and excessive backfiring.
