Exclamation 2002 Thunderbird Temp. Light flickering

I know this subject has been discussed many times. Please excuse me as I am a new member and the new owner of a 2002 Thunderbird. I am having the problem with the flickering temp. light which I have read was a grounding problem on earlier models. I found a instruction sheet to correct the ground problem only to find out that the wire colors were not the same. The dealer tells me there is nothing from Triumph on the problem on the 2002 model. Can any shed any light on the problem?

I've got the same problem. I found this about it:

4. Locate the black wire at pin 2 (arrowed). On the MAIN harness side of the plug, cut the wire 25mm from its entry point to the back of the connector.

5. Tape the cut wire from the main harness onto the main harness ensuring that no bare wires are left showing.

6. Take a 30 cm length of black wire and attach a small eyelet to one end using soldered connectors. Join the other end to the remaining 25mm of wire coming from pin 2 of the harness plug. Use a soldered in-line connector. Fully insulate the joint with insulation tape after making the connection.

7. Route the new wire through the grommet at the rear of the headlight bowl then to follow the same route as the main harness. Tape it to the main harness at 5 cm intervals. Ensure the grommet is not displaced from the headlight bowl.

8. Attach the eyelet end of the new wire to the frame in the position shown below using an M6x10 bolt and washer. Ensure the attachment point is free from road dirt, paint/powder coat and grease.

9. Refit the headlight.

10. Re--connect the battery, positive (red) lead first.

Note. Wire at Pin 1 is Blue/yellow
Pin 3 has no wire fitted.
This is the face of the main harness side plug;
clip on top, wires exiting from the back.

I haven't pulled mine apart yet to verify - let me know if yours matches the colors noted here. The one issue I noticed is that this problem is supposed to stop after VIN 111989 (last 6 of VIN). Mine falls beyond this range.

I just did the ground wire repair on my 2002 Thunderbird 900 with VIN way beyond the VIN you mention. It worked great and it wasn't that difficult.

If it's not the ground...

It may be the sensor itself. My 2000 T-bird would intermittently show me the temp light last year. The tech at the dealer went through the ground-fix routine but the problem persisted. He replaced the sensor for about $10 and that fixed the issue.

I have the temp. sensor on order. I changed the coolant today and everything looked clean. I will try the sensor when it comes in. Thanks for the response.

Thanks for your reply RickN. I checked the site you suggested and it does have good information. I will check the wiring colors to see if they match the suggested changes. Will let everyone know. Thanks for all responses.

Dead Eye: Here is a specific thread specifically dealing with the heat light flickering on 2002 Tbirds (pretty specific, eh?)

The whole thread has great information in it with specific wire colours given by ReadyT in post #13 which exactly matched mine - so they will match yours too.

One important question to ask: does the light flicker when the signals flash? If it does, it is most likely due to the gound problem.

RickN - Yes it does flicker with the turn signal. I seeking out the ground problem. My wires are a solid yellow in pin 1 and a black/white in pin 2. I have not gone to the sight you suggested to see if the wire colors match. I am going there now.
