Well I finally got the nerve to do the valve adjustment on my 03 T-Bird Sport!
Not that bad of a job after all, what surpirsed me was that they were good to go.The bike has 15K miles on it and they is no history of it being done before.Only a couple of valves might have been .001 over max allowed, none were to tight(which i was glad). Is it comon not to have to adjust them? Its the only one in my town(Lafayette,La.)it gets alot of looks.Yall have a good day where ever yall at!

my guess would be that the 6k service was done - it does often happen that they are all in spec, especially if the first adjust has been done.

Valve Adjustment

I had the same question. My bike has 17k on it and the compression was high on 2 cylinders but when i went to get the valves adjusted the guy said they were all within spec but some were getting real close and to do it next year. Is this common?

Did my TBS 12000 mile check earlier this week, only one inlet shim needed changing, a couple of others were borderline, but I'll leave them till the next service, that's if they get worse

The valve seat on these motors tend to recede into the head, thus closing up the clearance. Loose is OK ( as long as it isnt too bad)

As an addendum:

I don't know if Triumph ever changed how they assembled them, but they used to only have 0.05 increments for the shims.

You can however get 0.025 increment shims and get the clearance setting that much closer to the mean value. This is good, once done, your valves have that bit further to go before they are then out of spec [unless you are anal retentive like me and try to keep them as close as possible to the mean value every time you check them].

I had two loose exhaust valves at 6200...used Yamaha shims. (I think) Job went real smoothly. Easier that I thought it was going to be. (I tend to angst situations before I attack them- My angsting usually turns out to be unjustified)
