New Pipes -- Update

A couple months back I bought a set of used downpipes and put them on Mutato, so I figured I'd update on the installation.

The stock mufflers wouldn't fit and the Emgo 'shorty megaphone' was a disaster -- excessively loud to the point of painful.

Then one of the folks here got me thinking about muffler design so I built one. It's fabricated from 1-1/2" electrical conduit, 4" round electrical boxes and covered with 4" galvanized HVAC ductwork. The outer cover is attached with pure tin plumber's solder for a higher temperature melting point than 60/40 solder.

Most importantly, it works quite well!

The offset pipe from the header to the muffler is also conduit and the couplings are from the same source but sawed in half and filed out to fit. It's definately the ugliest way to bend pipe but gave a really smooth bend and interior. Besides, I like the post-apocalypse look...

The total price of materials was about $40 plus about another $20 for a replacement spool of welding wire.

I'm currently running #130 main jets with #40 pilots but the pilots are too large and I haven't done any 'fine tuning' on the main jet size. At least I'm not getting any obvious misfires with this setup.

Thats a different look Jim. Paint it black and no one will ever know. BTW, I was looking at the other pics in your album, what caliber is that hose outlet? ;-)

The muffler is the first prototype and a bit larger than necessary but I've started on a slightly shorter second version with some internal modifications. There's a bit of a raspy tone to it at high rpm that I want to try and reduce.

It's kind of ugly but it's quieter than the slashcut TORs I was running on the stock pipes and WAY quiter than the shorty on the header. It's also lighter than one of the TORs, so I'm ahead on that scale too!

Target is supposed to have some stainless steel spaghetti storage cannisters that are the right size so the final version should look a lot nicer than the protos.

It also feels like it flows more than the shorty did. Mutato seems to want to get airborne at about 5,000 and it's downright scary up to redline. That makes for a rather rapid trip to 90 mph in second gear for butt dyno runs. I haven't had the nerve to open it up in first -- I need to even out the torque curve a bit first..

BTW, the hose outlet is .40 caliber.:

In response to the individual who suggested in an e-mail that I don't actually ride my bike :
but just like to tinker, here's the first few minutes of my ride home from work.

Eat your heart out, flatlander!

Oh, and enjoy the sound track. I hope you like light classical music.

Mate thats a cracker of a soundtrack. I may need to go into therapy after hearing that.
Looks like a fun ride home, there a hell of a lot of tar snakes on that first part I bet they are fun in the rain.

There's some excellent riding around here. Nameless Road is good, FM1431 is very popular as is TX71 (but they're often cluttered with Harleys on the weekends) and there are herds of smaller but excellent roads around that I've just started exploring.

The tar snakes aren't as bad as the other snakes I'm told. Running over a 6-footer is supposed to be an 'unpleasant' experience since one end rattles and the other end bites.

Yeah we have more than our fair share of snakes here. Some are deadly, some are just slippery. When it gets over 40 degrees here those tar snakes almost liquefy, causing some very interesting handling quirks. A trap for the unwary.
So the move was well worth it Jim? A more temperate climate is always better I reckon. I tried living in cold places. Bah they can have it.

The tar snakes aren't a problem as long as you're aware of them and adjust your speed and lean accordingly. Most folks who have trouble with them do so because they tense up or think that their bike is having a major steering malfunction.

It hit 37C today and some of the folks were complaining about the heat, but it still beats the snot out of -29C air temps and a -100C chill factor!

BTW, need a pair of -20F rated Sorel boots? Good for ice fishing, you betcha!

hey jimmy , nice video . seems your car rolls alot going through corners :P

jk'ing .

what's your video recording setup ? been wanting to do one for awhile (like i don't have enough hobby's) .

was kinda disappointed that you didn't have the audio of your new pipes not that i didn't enjoy the music (turned it off) . a ride vid like that with the engine , shifting , wind noise woulda sounded great .

would like to hear from others on the video thing but remembered that we're only allowed t-bird threads here ;-( so didn't start a sep thread .
