Do you think this might be the problem?

I have been asking this board for help with diagnosing my missing/hesitation problem with my 1999 Legend TT.

I think I might have found the cause - what do you think?

Can the filter be purchased separately or do I need the whole box?

I suppose I should clean the carbs?

K&N offers a filter. Otherwise it's the whole box or wash what ya got.

I had a similar problem when I bought my 2002 Thunderbird. I don't think there was as much shells and it hadn't been run much with the shells in there because I am pretty sure it happened when it was stored in the previous owner's shed for the winter. The rodents sneek in through the air breather and make a nice safe home out the of the filter box. There were shells in both the air intake box and filter box but I vacuumed them out before I started riding it and have noticed no ill effects.

I wonder if there should be some sort of coarse screen on the air intake inlet?

I definitely plan to improvise a course screen - maybe there are no critters in the UK.

Other Motorcycle: Can't afford two!
Extra Motorcycle: Three would be insane
just wash, dry and lightly re-oil that filter.

Tonight I pulled off the carbs, disassembled and cleaned them, de-crittered the airbox, and put humpty dumpty back together again. Four hours - but pretty satisfying. Fired the bike up - took a while to draw in the gas - then it kicked in pretty good - adjusted the idle and throttle. Sounds like a whole new bike. Will take it out tomorrow to see how it runs. I am optimistic . . .

This was my first mechanical work on a Hinckley triple - to get the look, they have given us some operations that require contortionist skills close to Houdini. Getting it done in my garage at 93 degrees on a humid evening adds to the allure. Refitting the gas line to the stopcock has to win some kind of a prize.

Talking

What a bunch of uncaring individuals, taking away wildlife habitat, contributing to species extinction, adding to global warming.

Have pity for the rodent......

PS was it a former RAT pack member???
