Oil Consumption

had to top up 2001 TBS oil yesterday, about 200 ML took it back to just over halfway up the window.. thats over 3000 miles - normal???
its done just over 21000, no sign of any leaks or oily silencers/smoke, so guess its just 'breathing' it out somewhere??

200ml is just over half a can of soda - that really doesn't sound like much to me. But then my 95 TB has somewhere approaching 50K and I ride it fairly hard.

Thu/Friday - I rode 1200 miles on motorways at typical speeds of 75-85mph. The oil went from right at the top of the sightglass to a bit under the bottom of the sight glass - how much that is, I do not know 'cause I haven't topped it back up yet.

FYI - the oil breather tube runs from the left hand engine cover (the one that looks like an 8) up and into the airbox between the airfilter and the carbs (so it doesn't foul the filter). There is a second tube that runs down from the airbox to the rear suspension link which is intended to drain excess oil/petrol/water - it should have a stopper in it. Unstopper it and see how much comes out.

I saw the airbox breather tube mentioned a while back and checked mine then - it doesnt have a plug in it.. I guess its only there for 'enviromental' reasons so that you empty any oil in to an approved container, rather than venting to atmosphere?? I'm not too worried about the small amount of oil used, just curious as i'm used to older bikes wehere topping up is part of the routine!

Well, it's also allowing unfiltered air to be sucked up into the carbs - not a lot obviously but I would say you should stopper it. Also, that way, it will alert you to excessive oil/petrol pooling in the airbox.

The stopper may be way up the top of the tube, mine was the first time I checked it. I now have a small metal bung in it held in place with a zip tie. I remove it the night before I service the bike and let it drain. Sometimes it has a little oil in sometimes none. My bike has done 97,000klms, and the oil level drops a little sometimes( about 150-200mls) When it does the drain tube usually gives me a little oil back.

thanks, I'll check to see if the stopper has been pushed further up the tube, if not I'll fit one..
