Hello, I have a bit of a problem i think with my carbs on a 94 speed triple.

I have had the carbs off the bike to do the dreaded sprag clutch replacement, which to be fair was quite easy. Anyway they have been off and resting on top of the frame while the engine was out for about 2 months, i disconnected the choke cable but not the throttle cable as i didnt need to.

When i fitted everything back together and got the carbs on the bike started fine but goes straight to about 5k rpm it will still rev further but it is like the tickover is now 5k. I checked all the throttle linkages and everything is clear and not obstructed, i even took all the cables off the carbs and started it again but just the same.

I am not very good with carbs at the best of times, have i got something jammed or split a diaphragm maybe?, i have had them off and on before to clean the filters in the lines between the carbs but that was for about an hour and they went straight back on and started fine.

I am going to strip and clean them tonight but wondered if anyone had any ideas, thanks in advance,

Sid

The first thing I would check is that you have some slack in the throttle and choke cables, also that the throttle stop screw is not turned in too far.

Secondly, I would be inclined to look for an air leak at one of the rubber boots. With the engine running, squirt the area around the carbs with WD40. It If there is an air leak the WD40 will get sucked in and burned, leading to a momentary increase in RPM.

Leaving the cabrs dangling opens the butterfly. maybe you have a butterfly valve stuck open.

Take the carbies off and check the throat for a butterfly that isn't closed.

Otherwise could still be an air leak like Slinky said.
