I know that this is going to be a stupid question, but I am going to ask anyway. I have a 2001 Legend with Keihin Carbs. I have added a pair of Staintune's exhaust and a K&N filter. The filter came with new jets so I decided to change them out this afternoon. After removing the airbox, and the carbs, I took the bowls off. I found and replaced the .38 Main Jets that were in the carbs with new .42 mains, however I can not find the Pilot Jets. I guess I am overlooking them. Can anyone tell me where to look? I think that I will rebuilt the carbs while they are off the bike, is BikeBandit a good place to get carb parts?

The #38 jets are the stock pilot jets and are located down a tube next to the main jets. The main jets sit on top of a brass nut in the center of the carb.

Take a look at my photo album (clicky below) in the Keihin CVK folder for the locations.

#42 pilot jets are probably too big for the stock air filter box and will cause extremely rich running at part throttle and idle. They should also drop your mileage down below 40 mpg -- maybe way below -- so you might want to reconsider especially with summer conditions here since a rich setup only gets richer with high heat and humidity.

A #40 pilot is probably the biggest you want to install, but go ahead and try the #42's and see if you prefer them to the stock #38's.

You really shouldn't need to rebuild the carbs. At most, clean the float bowls and pilot jets and that should be all that's required.

If you want to play with jet sizes then Carb Parts Warehouse has them. www.carbparts.com Give them a call with credit card in hand and they'll be happy to supply a full range of sizes.

For main jets I'd suggest #100's. The stock size is a #98 but with the temperatures and extreme humidity down here that's probably the biggest you can use with an unmodified filter box.

Questions or problems post them here and we'll do our best for you.

Jim
