Hey gang.

Jimmy:
I'll have to check the choke-at-idle thing. I didn't notice it running better, but wasn't really looking for that, so will pay more attention.
I drove the bike from my place to my buddies place, to use his garage, and it ran quite well, except for the sucking noise, so i was surprised that this came up at all.
We didn't open the carbs up, just took them out enough to slip on the new rubbers.
Also, I do computer tech support for my folks all the time, so I know about the joys of remote diagnosis, hehe. I actually took pictures of the carbs, and took a "voice recording" of the engine rev'ing. Unfortunately my camera is a piece of junk, and I can't get the sound file off my phone, haha... <sigh>

ecrabbit96:
I had the original boots on there before they were leaking, and hadn't adjusted the carbs to compensate for the leak. If I do gun it hard i get a little dark smoke from the pipes, but can't remember if that means rich or lean...
I'd definately be interested in that box. I'll PM you.

I still haven't had a chance to try throttling right from the carbs. I'm sort of holding out for a throttle cable issue since that would mean that I dont' have to adjust the carbs, hehe. I don't know enough about carbs to feel like I'm doing anything but guessing. Anyone know if the throttle cable is a Triumph specific bit, or can i get that from anywhere??

Thanks for all the feedback!

Dan

If you'd have said that up front, I'd have suggested replacing the needles and needle jets in your carbs. Those tend to rub and wear on the Mikuni carbs and will cause excessive richness (black smoke) as the carb slides open.

Also, your "tf-tf-tf-tf-tf" from the first post. Check that your sparkplugs are tight. A loose plug will make a noise like that or a 'chirping' sound just before it pops out of the head. Worth checking since a loose plug will also misfire.

I wish I could get my hands on your bike for a couple of hours... :-D

Yea, what he said. Black smoke, rich, and the plug thing I've seen also. If the bike is not running smooth it will loosen some of it's fasteners all on it's own. I check things from time to time because of this, ie. exhaust nuts, plugs, and the like. It does sound like the bike has gotten rich now that the air leak is stopped. Got your PM, replied.

Hey folks. If anyone is interested in potential solutions to this problem, I've had the bike in to the shop and they've found that the needle jets and jet needles have worn a bit, and leak somewhat at idle. I'm ordering 3 new jets and needles now, at the mechanics behest, but was curious to know if anyone is aware of non-triumph replacements that I might not have to wait 2 weeks to have shipped to me. If not that's fine, the mecahnic has claimed 99% certainty that this will clear up the problem, so I'll post again when I get to finally go for a ride.

You've got a pretty common Mikuni BS carb there so you might want to check with Carburetor Parts Warehouse www.carbparts.com for replacements.

Just tell them the application and that it's a 36mm BS and they *might* be able to help you. If they have the parts they usually ship the same day on a credit card order.

On a (potentially) unrelated note, my airbox is pretty shot, with stripped screw holes, and torn plastic all over the place. I tried to ask my local dealer what a replacement part would run me but he didn't seem to have it in the computer. Anyone have a part number (or numbers) handy?
My microfiche says T2200043 for up to 71698 and T2201200 for 71699 and up. The "and up" numbers might refer to engine number or maybe VIN, I don't know.

My Dealer, www.worldofpowersports.com, quotes both parts at $64.27, and says use T2201200 for all Tbird applications. I recommend the dealer; I've worked with them for many years, even though I don't live in Decatur, Illinois anymore, they're always quick to send me the part, (provided Triumph USA is quick to send it) and their online parts ordering is easy to use.

Hey everyone. In case anybody is interested in resolution to this little story the shop replaced the needle jets and jet needles, which seems to have cleared up the idle and rev problems. There are other issues (new thread) which are new since getting it back, but that what happens when someone else puts their hands on your engine, i guess... Apparently the slides are startign to wear as well, so i might need to look at those in the not too distant future as well, but it might be worth swapping the mikuni's out for kheinins at that point...

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions!
