Anyone know if the igniter for a 2000 Legend is interchangable with other brands: i.e. kawasaki, etc. New ignitor from Triumph runs $600. Sometimes they can be found on ebay, as well as, similar appearing ignitor from other brands of bike.
Thanks! Eric

If you found an igniter from another brand, would it not have to be from another TRIPLE? :???:

As far as I've been able to learn, only Triumph uses the Gill ignitions.

they are unique to the brand by way of the programming - while some other bikes use the same unit (american iron horse for one) the burned in parameters are bike specific and cannot be changed.

For a 2000 legend your only real option is to find one from another legend or Tbird from the same year range (the legend used at least 2 different styles). Do not try to fit one from a bonneville, even though they use the same physical unit as the late legend, again the programming is different (2 cylinder vs 3)

I've been burned by the Gill ignitor also. Got a replacement (used/half price) from the breakers at Baxters 3 summers ago. I would normally not consider used electronics but my wallet told me to give it a try. The replacement was the boxy screwed together version (older?) 30K+ and still working (fingers tightly crossed)

It would sure be nice to have another option if and when this one goes.

I was checking around. There are a few programable ignitors available for 6 cylinder engines which I'll bet could be used with the right data. Use half and have a built in back-up?

I see that SeaDoo and Kawasaki make 3 cylinder watercraft about the same displacement as our bikes. The older Kaws even used Keihin CVs. I'll bet these ignitors work fine in the rain! The question is could they be prerogrammed to work our bikes?

All these options are in the $200 range v $600+ for the Gill P-O-S. Food for thought?

no, as I said they cannot be reprogrammed. You may likely find that they use the same Gill system too.

Actually the "ignitor" is pretty reliable its the pickup and coils that tend to fail. The failure may well be down to other factors too such as noise / spikes / incorrect voltage in the rest of the system - it may well be linked to the frying of batteries. Just speculating here :-D

I picked up a used igniter from a 99 thunderbird but it is different than the one on the 2001 Adventurer. If the 2000 uses the same as the 1999 . Im willing to part with it for what it cost me

I could be interested in that igniter. I might be needing it myself and am not looking forward to paying 600 for a new one. How much? That is if you still have it after a year. rofl
