Is this just a fact of life with Triumph's retros?
The T-bird's my first bike so I really don't have anything to compare with.
It's got a little "clonk" in the gear shifter, and a little vibration and rattle here and there.
The bike handles really well and the engine runs smoothly so I'm not really worried.
I thought maybe it was the same with Triumph as they say it is with Harley's.

Best,
Spooner

Believe it or not that is totally normal for a Thunderbird. Triumph make clunky shifters and the Tbird has a vibration around 2900 RPM or so. If that is where your bird vibrates the most then nothing is wrong.

Sounds as if all is well. A tune-up and carb sinc may help the vibration. How many miles on your "Bird?" They seem to get better with age. Also, fresh oil helps. I found an improvement w/ Amsoil, but Triumph synthetic is good as well.
As far as the overall "feel" of the bike, T-Birds tend to have soggy front brakes. A change of fluid and good bleeding (the brakes, not you!) should help that situation.

It's got 11,000 miles on the meter.
What do you mean with "bleeding" the brakes?

Thank you for your help!!

Hi, Spooner: your bike sounds pretty normal to me. The top end of these triples sounds like someone shaking a coffee can full of marbles, normal, and the clunking gearbox, while normal, does get better with time. Mine has quieted down now, at 15K miles, where I can snick the bike through the gears very smoothly. However, when sitting at idle with the bike out of gear, dropping it into low will often still produce that distinct "clonk." Again, normal. There is a distinct vibration, or hum, in the bike somewhere between 2900 and 3200 rpm, which I suspect is due to the engine being a stressed member of the frame support system. You should notice this especially when the bike is under load in a gear that is too high for the situation. The solution is to shift down and get the bike into rpm range above 3300. As to brakes, I have never had any problem with them being soft or feeling mushy. "Bleeding" simply means to let out brake fluid until it runs clear without any air bubbles coming out with the stream of fluid. If you aren't having any problems with your brakes, I wouldn't "fix" it.

Take care,

Monte
