I have an ignition advance rotor that I want to install today on my 2001 Adventurer. It is my understanding that all I need to do is remove the correct side plate and replace the original one with this new one. I'm not mechanically stupid (I've rebuilt car engines), but could someone tell me what side of the bike, and which plate I need to remove? And any other tips you might have to make it easier.

Thanks, Steve in Cincinnati

My assumption is that it fits on the end of the camshaft?

Thanks, Steve

Okay, so that means I need to remove the heart shaped polished cover on the right hand side? Is it sealed from oil, or will all the oil run out? Will I need some new gasket if I remove the cover?

Thanks, Steve

Looks more kidney shaped to me....

Get yourself a gasket before you open it up. The gasket may come away complete, but no sense waiting 2 weeks for a replacement if it breaks.

When you remove the cover, loosen the bolts in steps and in a star pattern or you may warp the cover! On the first twist of the wrench, only loosen the bolts about a quarter turn. That's enough to loosen the bolt but maintain tension on the cover.

On the second pass, another quarter turn. From that point on you're free to pull the bolts all the way out.

When you put the cover back on, tighten the bolts only to a light finger tight on the first pass. Use a star pattern and just use a socket and extension without the ratchet.

Go over the bolts again (star pattern) the same way and then torque to spec on the last pass.

Oh yeah, a smear of heavy grease on the engine side of the gasket will usually keep it from breaking next time you take the cover off.

If you remove the cover with the bike on the sidestand you won't get an oil spill.

Jim

THANKS JIMMY! I guess I'll have to make a trip up to Joey's or either get him to mail me a gasket. What are odds it will break? (I know thats a dumb question)

Jimmy, just noticed where you are from! I moved up here from Austin in 1998 (too bad for me). I lived up northwest just off 183 close to Pond Springs Road. Kids went to McNeil High school. Is it worse or better there now?

What are the odds you'll have to wait 2 weeks for a replacement vs. the odds of tearing the gasket? :-D

Can't answer that question -- we just moved down here from Minnesota last September. All I can say is that it really beats the snot out of Minnesota!

Warm weather, GREAT food, no -20F winter... :-D

I'm sure it's much busier in the area than it was since there seems to be constant construction here of one kind or another and it's all building up rapidly.

You might want to take a look at http://www.twtex.com/
and http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/TexasTriumphRiders/ if you want to keep in touch with Texas riders.

I'm curious - why would you want to replace it? What is the source of the replacement?
