Hi all. I'm Andy and a virgin to all this forum stuff but I've a query and hope anyone can help.
I own a '96 t'bird and its breaking down. I'm yet to remove anything for inspection as I thought it could ring a bell with someone first.
After bike is warmed up or after a few miles it breaks down suddenly, just cutting out. It will start again after about an hour but continues to cut out shortly afterwards.
Oil & coolant fine. Is this cutting out a safety thing for overheating or something else. All I can think is its either thermostat or water pump. I haven't removed either yet for inpection.
Hope someone can help prior to my dismantling.
Cheers.

Cheers Tommybro. Any reason for your suggestion?

Aye, the coils sometimes cutout when they're hot, if they're bad. If not that, I had a 1981 Yamaha that would cut out whenever it got wet, because of cracked spark plug boots. I doubt that it's you're problem, but would offer it in case.

If you're getting one cylinder misfiring when hot it's probably the ignition coil on that cylinder.

If all three cylinders become intermittant (or shut down) at the same time the ignition pickup coil is indicated since that's common to all three coils.

It's also possible that you're having a fuel starvation problem from vacuum buildup in the fuel tank. Verify that the tip-over valve is vertical because it shuts off if it's tilted. (It's located on a bit of hose from the lower left side of the fuel tank rear.)

If it's vacuum buildup then opening the filler cap should let you start the bike immediately upon venting.

Jimmyj900, Could you expound on the tip over valve a little? Is it common to all Triumph's? I dropped my Trophy and it started initially but now I get nothing. It seems like there is no fuel getting to the carbs. Perplexed in L.A.(lower Alabama.)

The tipover valve is located on a short stub of hose that comes off the left rear of the tank. It's a black plastic cylindrical device about 2-1/2" long and about 3/4" in diameter and the "big end" must point down. A long hose comes off the big end and runs down by the suspension so that any fuel overflow from the tank goes onto the road rather than through the carbs.

The tilt valve (unless tilted) functions both for fuel tank air venting and as part of the overflow system for the fuel tank. When installed and working properly it allows pressure and excess fuel venting from the tank -- like when you fill the tank and park the bike in the sun.

The tilt valve also provides considerable reverse airflow into the tank, so as you use fuel it can be replaced by air. If the valve stops working, it allows a vacuum to begin building in the tank and eventually the vacuum can prevent fuel from flowing.

I had this problem when the engine was hot. It was the ignition sensor which cost aabout £25 and is an easy fix. Bike has been perfect ever since (35000 miles and counting)
