Hello,
i buy a 01 TB 3 weeks ago and its a great bike.
but now there is a problem insight.

When shifting down, the shift lever stays sometimes in lower position for 3-5 seconds, then he goes up so you can shift down again. This happens first time 3 days ago, but problem is increasing, so it happens more and more often. in addition the neutral lamp works only 2of 10 times since yesterday.
Any idea ?

thanks for help..................

Greetings from Germany

I had a shift lever problem once when the teeth stripped a little on the post. Not only did it stay down, it nearly fell off.
The little steel pin held it on.
I repositioned and retightened it, but it slipped again. The teeth on the post we're still good but they were stripped on the lever. I eventually JB Welded and tightened it up. May not have been the best fix, but it hasn't slipped since.

Sounds like the detent rollers on the gear selector drum are misbehaving - maybe the spring has broken or come adrift from one. the only way you will really tell is to remove the oil pan and take a look (or have your dealer look for you).

Before you take anything apart, make sure it's not just bound up from road grime. If a little penetrating oil on the joints makes it better, maybe it just needs cleaning.

there aint no joints to bind on a regular thunderbird - the shift lever is bolted to the input shaft unlike the thunderbird sport's gearshifter.

You may have a problem with the neutral switch binding on the selector drum. To check it, loosen the switch a couple of turns and try it. If it improves, take the switch off, add a washer or two to space it out, and tighten up

Uh, yeah, I knew that. I think. Could there be some stickyness on the seal whare the input shaft penetrates the gearbox? I always like to try the simple fixes first.

If the lever isn't stripped and it's something in the transmission, I would suggest changing the oil. Definitely use the factory recommended stuff and see if that helps. My Legend always shifts better on fresh oil.

Thanks for help,

today i checked the neutral switch and he is dead, sometimes he worked next moment he doesn´t. new one is ordered also oil pan seal, so i can take oil pan off and have a look.
First i did is clean it all and give a little lubrication.
Today i could only try the lever without riding because of really bad weather (snow, all day long).

Bike British, fight for your rights.

( Hope my English isn't too bad )

Dirk
