ok guys and gals. as i continue to try and get some options for my rear tire, i have started putting some thought into replacing the 16 inch stock rear w/ a 17. I've searched for some previous threads on this (i know i've seen them, but can't find them) and thought i would take it to the experts.
Specifically, how much effort is it? is there something that i can simply swap out or is there fabrication/adjustment necessary? how much will it change the look/ride of my bird?
Not a big deal now as i have a new hind on order, but it has not been the easiest process to get them to match.
Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

You probably would need to get hold of a Tbird Sport rear.
Or you could get a 17" rim laced to you existing hub, quite an expensive operation. A wheel from a sprint or a speed cripple would possibly work as well, some on here have changed over to non spoked wheels so they can run tubeless.

The Legend had 17" wheels as well. If you go with a TBS one remember that 98/99 were alloy like your fornt wheel and 2000+ where chromed steel so thye would look different.

Or you could use a wheel off a Trophy, Daytona 900-1200, carburetted Sprint or S3. Your choice in tires is huge.
I have a set of Trophy wheels on my wife's Legend. It's a little work and expense (thanks ebay) but worth the trouble. The rear requires a early Trophy or Trident caliper and bracket to go along with the Trophy disc which is a different size than the Classic disc. Everything else mounts right up. On the front I put Trophy forks, twin discs, calipers and an early Trophy fender. Daytona 900-1200 parts would work and you would have the fully adjustable forks.

The same is true for the legend too. Early wheels were Akront (actually better wheels). If you find legend wheels you could swap the front in too - then you would have 17" both front and back - much wider choice of good tires.
yes, its all a straight swap

I must say that I am tempted to change to a wheel size for which there is a wider choice of tyres (and greater certainty of future supply). If I changed the wheels front and back to 17", how would this affect the height/attitude of the bike, if at all?
