Why is it that my tbird starts to run a little rough when the gas gets low? At about 100 miles I notice a little rougher running. Is it because there is less gas in the tank and less pressure in the lines, or something floating in the gas?

here is an anecdote that may prove useful :

A friend of mine changed carbs on his ducati 900 twice before checking his tank for particulates.

After spending a heap of money importing new replacement carbs to NZ from the USA amongst other places and neither new carb setup fixing his issues, he asked me for advice.

I suggested checking the tank and and sure enough there was small flakes (of paint I presume) blocking the fuel taps.

Sometimes the cheap solutions are the best.

BTW he experienced similar symptoms; the tank would get to a certain level and he would start getting fuel starvation / rough running / bucking issues.

good luck

Interesting observation, durkster. We know that there are paint problems with the paint flaking off around the gas fill inlet. What I can't visualize is how the amount of gas in the tank makes any difference.

In any case, that well may be the problem. Wabbit, if it is, do let us know. This old dog still likes to learn new tricks.

Take care, guys,

Monte

I had a 99 Adventurer that did this all the time. I found that simply cracking open the gas cap took care of it. I think they have had venting problems with these tanks.

Clear the vapor hole in the fuel cap.... probably has some blockage.

Their are 2 petcock screens set at different heights. The lower one is for reserve. I'd concur that you have crap clogging the screens. It's a common problem and simple fix. Drain the tank, disassemble the petcock (2 screws), inspect and carefully clean the contraption. Carb cleaner works fantastic. You should separate the parts too, no need to fully disassemble, just loosen everything. I've had these symptoms too. I found some reddish crud, consistency of fine sand, probably rust.

If you do pull the tank , please also give it a good visual internal inspection with a flashlight.

If you see any corrosion / flaking you may want to use something like POR-15 to re-etch and then reseal the tank surface.
