The bike sounds very repairable - especially if the frame is still straight. A well-trained Triumph mechanic can fix that shifter shaft on the cheap. If they say it requires following the service manual (splitting the cases), they don't know what they are doing - find another shop.
Like Mick says, a parts breaker can get you a good 43mm Showa forked front end for a few hundred bucks that can make a nice upgrade.
Just remember that crashing a Legend is a good excuse to customize. You could end up with something truely unique and special!
