So I'm halfway through the green cam install... so far, so good. Got the engine open, spilled the requisite amount of oil & coolent on the garage floor, etc.

Looking at my Haynes manual, it says to rotate the crankshaft until the 'T1' arrow points directly at the coil thingie, indicating TDC for the first cylinder. It also says, at this point, that the arrows on the cam gears should be pointing directly at each other.

Well, the arrows on my (stock) cams are pointing directly opposite. :???:

So, anyone who's done this before remember which is correct? Has the Haynes manual got it backwards? Is it different somehow for the Legend? Is there something horribly wrong w/ my bike?

I just want to be sure I get the new ones installed the right way... seems like that will be important for proper performance

Thanks.

Me thinks you need to rotate the crankshaft one turn and everything should line up correctly.

In four stroke engines TDC occurs every other revolution.

Sure, you just need to turn the crank through 360 degrees to get the arrows to line up.

*Finally* got the bike put back together today... installed a set of T509 s3 cams (same as the infamous 'green cams') and raised the needles one slot since last time. Oh, and irridium (sp?) spark plugs.

Haven't had much butt dyno time (or any real dyno time), but it's definitely boosted the top end - feels much stronger at highway speeds. Also seems happier higher in the rev band now, at around 5k rather than 4. Conversely, seems a bit rough at lower reves/lower speeds... not sure if it's a jetting/carb issue or just me gettng used to the way it revs now.

Hopefully will get some dyno time soon so I can see if it really made a difference, or if it's all just in my mind :-D

The install was relatively straightforward... learned a few things, that's for sure. Biggest problem was the valve clearances - I had them all set, got new shims, installed them, and two of them were off! Then I had to wait 2 weeks to get a shim from Bike Bandit, neither of my local shops could come up with a 2.775. Will definitely be getting the Triumph valve tool next time, getting tired of taking the cams on and off to swap shims!

At least this time I got the bike back together in April instead of June...
