So this past weekend I get all my gear on and head out back to give her the obilgatory minute or two warm up. As she's on choke warming and creeping up past 2,000rpm nearer to 2300 rpm up I hear this weird metallic sort of whistling that goes away when I goose it and comes back when she settles back around 2300. Any thoughts guys?

The best way to decsribe it would be that same sort of whistling you would hear from a slipping fan belt on a car but not as loud, much more subtle. Maybe a cross between that and a waterpump growl, but more of a whistle in that it was a mechanical whistle and not airflow ... atleast so it seemed.

Any thougts or direction appreciated. I didn't notice it much while riding or after coming back but then again the GF lowsided while we were out so my mind was elsewhere.

Have you got any leaks anywhere? I don't want to be too pessimistic but the first thing that comes to mind is a head gasket. They can whistle when they are blowing, and close up once everything expands.

Hope your GF is okay..

Hi Slinky, and thanks, she's sore but otherwise OK. Nice lump on the ankle is about the worst of it.

As for the bike, I checked for leaks and all was well. My first thought was that maybe the water pump was acting up or running dry so I was looking for any signs of coolant leaking. No leaks to be seen.

:???: It behaved well enough while we were out but the noise was so far outside of the normal range of ticks and triple sound effects that I took notice right away. I should add that it was intemittent at high idle coming and going, more coming than going though

can you track the whistle to the mufflers ?? if so mine does the same only at the first fireup then disapears as she gets going on all 3 old volks wagons did the same thing through the mufflers probably because of the opening being so small at the ends of the outlets then they whistle
